J,
What automation do you plan to use? Pentair automation will only control IntelliFlo style pumps.. It is not made to control the SuperFlo VS.. Hard to believe, but it is true..
I have three simple pools and all three have EasyTouch automation systems, IntelliFlo pumps, and IC40 salt system.. I could not have made a better choice. Two of the pools are rent house pools and I bought the systems from Amazon and could not have cared less about the warranty.. For the price of professional installation, I could have bought two complete systems and that just did not make much sense to me..
After I retired from the Air Force, I ran several warranty repair shops over the years until I retired for real.. One thing I learned is that the 90% of all failures are right out of the box or within a few days... With the exception of brand new products... The two systems that I installed are still working today.. One is over 7 years old and the other over 8 years old.. I initially thought is was older than that but I had my install dates wrong.. I just replaced the cell on one pool about a 8 months ago and the other cell about a month or so ago... Other than that they have been running just fine.
Anyone that says the IntelliFlo is over kill, has no clue what they are talking about. The great thing about a large VS pump is that they can move a lot of water at a low RPMs.. This means that they are very quiet and cost next to nothing to run.. All my systems run 24/7, most of the time at about 1200 RPM.. The pump at my house runs me less than $20 bucks a month.
A way around the warranty issue is to find a pool guy who will install the equipment for your for a fee.. He needs to have a company and be able to invoice you for the service. Depending on your skill level, you can install it yourself and have him just sign off on the install.
I do not recommend installing the pump and SWCG first and then the automation.. The three items, Automation, SWCG and pump are all designed to work together. Installing all of them at the same time makes the most sense to me.. This way you can purchase the automation with the internal salt cell power supply and it will be wired up and almost ready to go.
If you go with the older EasyTouch and you want to be able to use your PC or phone, you will need something called ScreenLogic2. If you go with the newer IntelliCenter, it comes with a built-in ScreenLogic- like system..
Thanks,
Jim R.
