Pentair Quad D.E. With or without Multiport Valve

If you open the pump lid, the air is getting in before the filter, which causes the filter to drain out the returns. That’s OK. The main issue would be if air got in the filter at the filter or past the filter. If that happens, the water (and some DE) in the filter would drain back through the pump.

I would always add a check valve between the pump and filter.

Ok. It was always my impression that the pump speed/flow rate slows down significantly when using a pool pump to drain a pool. In other words, it may start off at 80GPM or more, but after a foot or two, the flow rate drops.

At my local Home Depot, I can rent a 2" submersible/trash pump (2/3HP) that does 3600GPH for $30 @ 4hours or $42 for a day. To me that seems a lot easier than using the pool pump and worrying about loss of prime, cavitation, etc.

Whatever works best...

I'm a fan of the check valves placed between the pump and filter. The only issue with this position is if an object makes it through the pump strainer basket and impeller then it could get stuck in the check valve and prevent it from completely closing. This is pretty rare though and easy enough to correct if it does happen.

The OPs pump should be able to do close to 10,000 gallons per hour (theoretically). However, realistically, you probably wouldn’t be able to do more than about 5,000 gallons per hour. Having the water drop only adds 1 foot of head per foot of water drop, so not a big difference.
Either way should work.

I have the Quad DE 100 with Multi-port and couldn't happier. I think backwashing before full disassemble and clean makes the hose off cleaning much easier. Also, after 2 years of use, that included backwash and full cleanings, I soaked the 4 cartridges overnight in a muriatic acid and water bath. Next day I reassembled and recharged with de and my clean pressure dropped from 11 to 5.
