Pentair MasterTemp 250 Display Not Working

Good Morning Everyone,

We opened our pool a couple of days ago with no issues. We went to turn up the heat yesterday and the display that shows the temperature is not displaying anything. I am able to press the "pool on" button and the green light will show up, however, nothing appears on the small display.

I have checked the fuse and it doesn't appear to be blown. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the forum!
The membrane key pad can sometimes fail.
Can we assume you have no automation or other control systems?
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry.

Good Morning,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I have just ordered a new membrane, thank you very much. Part of the membrane works "pool on" "heater off" buttons but it appears the small screen and everything else is not working.

I am not 100% sure what you mean by other control systems, but I do not believe so. We have a separate pump, but in terms of the heater that is it.

Great. Control system would be anything that provides outside control. Pentair has many automation systems. Some members have created DIY systems.

The display comes from the circuit board.

The membrane pad is just a clear window.

How old is the heater?

What happens when you turn off the power and then turn it back on?

Good Morning,

The heater is only 2 years old. I had the circuit board replaced 8 months ago from Pentair, they replaced it "out of warranty" as the heater was only 15 months old at that point and provided no warranty on the replacement part.

When I hold the "heater off" button and then turn it back on, nothing happens. The problem persists.

Thank you very much for your reply!

Edit: I watched the video and tried to trip the pins as indicated however it doesn't appear to work.

Did the heater work well until recently?

Shut off power to the unit for 5 minutes and then restore power and watch the display to see if anything happens.

Normal boot up is 888, 128 and then rX where X is the software revision number.

What is the power supply to the heater?

Check the voltage where it connects to the heater.

Can you show a picture of the inside of the metal box like this:

Check to see which voltage selector plug is installed but do not change it unless you are 100% sure that it needs to be changed.

Read through this reference to see if anything helps.

The warranty is 2 years or 3 years if you got it as part of a "Bundle".

Was the heater bought as part of a new build?

Did you get other Pentair equipment at the same time?

If yes, what did you get?

What is the date on the sticker on the heater that has the P/N?

Update: When I went into the heater to try and trip the pins, I cleaned them. Went for a coffee, came back and the heater was on and working. Turned up the heat and the display showed 75, I turned it up to 82 and the heater is working, it's very warm and I can feel the warm water in the jets. I just went back to take some photos (below) and the display screen is not working, but the pool heater is working. Very weird. Happy its working though!

We purchased the heater brand new when our old heater failed 2 seasons ago. It was the only thing we purchased, our pump was fine. It was installed by a qualified installer who is licensed. The Sticker says DC1823 Rev L. I contacted Pentair on Thursday, they told me that because they replaced that control board last year I have no warranty and they won't do anything for me. They offered to sell me another control board for around $850+

The black voltage selector plug is for 120 volts.

Is the incoming power 120 volts?

Note: Do not change the plug unless you are 100% sure that it needs to be changed!

There is excessive corrosion on everything, which indicates a corrosive environment or maybe a stray voltage.

Have you ever had mice in the heater?

Are chemicals stored nearby?

Have you had any strange electrical problems?

When I go to the breaker that is labeled pool heater there are two 120v connections. When I flip those nothing happens the heater is still drawing power because the pool heater indicator is green. This leads me to believe that they were mislabeled.

no mice to my knowledge, we do live in Canada though. The pool heater is located outside but is covered in the winter.

chemicals are stored within 2-3 feet, they are closed though however, I have moved them now. Would it be a bad idea to just let the heater do its thing and hope it was just a glitch or a ghost in the system?

Thank you. I tried to flip the breakers labeled pool heater but it appears they are labeled incorrectly, or those were the breakers for the previous pool heater. I need to call someone in to determine the correct breakers.

The heater is working now, the screen that displays the temperature doesn't work, which is fine I guess.

Maybe corrosion on the wire connections or maybe a bad circuit board, hard to tell for sure.

Heaters are a high liability and high risk type of equipment.

Therefore, I cannot recommend operating the equipment if there is any indication that it is not functioning correctly.

Thank you very much for your time and help, I really appreciate it!

I'm going to try and clean all the pins and hopefully, that solves the issue. Once again, thank you!
