I Live in upstate NY getting ready for pool season. I'd had this heater for years no issues ,but at the end of last season when the heater would turn on it would make one loud backfire/pop sound. Other than that the heater worked fine. I googled this question and received different responses from debris on the top of the heat exchanger, rust, corrosion on finned tubes- to Ignition switch turning on late.
Thanks,
Disco

Is it natural gas or propane? Propane is heavier than air and can accumulate in the heater if you have a leak ready for a spark to ignite it.
