I know I've got a leak (shaft seal likely) that has developed that I need to fix.. I hadn't noticed this new noise prior to our roof install last week but went out there today and it's pretty noticeable.. something in the impeller?

You have a shaft-seal leak, not just a likely one. That motor is near destroyed. Noise is bearings. It may also be near impossible to remove the motor from the sealplate without destroying it as well due to all the corrosion. Vey expensive to allow a pump to leak like that for that long.

that's what I was afraid of... safer to just turn the pump off until I get it serviced/replaced?

Safer? Not really, especially if you have a ground-fault breaker on that circuit. If you don't it is code-required that you do.
Could there be a larger problem? Yeah, pools are strange things, but in 30+ years I've seen it happen once, but not to a variable-speed motor.
