Hi everyone. Very nice of you all to make time to educate and help those of us who are new to the world of having a pool. Much appreciated!

We're ready to start building our pool after completing all revisions to the design and we need to choose a pool finish. Pebbletec is offered as part of the package so it won't cost more. I need to choose between Sheen (small pebbles) and Quartz (looks like plaster). We have little ones and the pool is primarily for them and their friends. I've read several posts on the downsides of pebble sheen in terms of how rough it can be for little feet but I also noticed that the issues seem to be related to issues with installation.

Normally we post when things go wrong and fewer people post when things actually work. So my question is: anyone around here who has pebble sheen and little ones and is happy and without issues?

The PB is a certified Pebbletec installer. They really don't care if we go one way or the other and, again, it is already part of the package we got.

Any inout will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to TFP!

Is the PB installing the pebble or using a sub?
One of the better subs in the PHX area is CalPlastering.

Show us your pool design and a detailed equipment list.

Here is my 2 cents on the high-level differences

Pebble Sheen is going to be rougher to the touch, but also mask color imperfections similar to how a textured wall will hide imperfections.

Quartz is going to be smoother to the touch, but also more prone to seeing imperfections including motling. Use the search feature to search up the many examples including this one so you can see.

There is no right or wrong answer, just a matter of personal preference on looks vs feel.

We have normal PebbleTec and it's not smooth though it has only caused a handful of abrasions in 22 years, mostly to me. If doing it again, I would probably opt for the PebbleSheen to try getting a smoother finish. Interesting that you are getting a "deal" on the Pebble. What that means is that they have priced the pool with enough profit to cover the expense of it but then won't give the price difference back to you if you chose plain old plaster. Good luck with the new pool and you can expect, as we have, to have years of enjoyment as the kids grow up and then, down the road, years of enjoyment as the grandkids grow up.

I am happy with my PebbleSheen. My young child plays on the sunshelf frequently, and I have not noticed any issues.

The surface has texture to it - but I would not call it rough. Although, I would not choose regular PebbleTec because I would not want more texture.

I would not hesitate to get PebbleSheen again.

If it is in your budget - I'd recommend looking into adding shimmering sea as well.

Sheen for sure, for all the reasons listed above.
It's smoother feeling than pebble finishes of 10 years ago.
Go to the showroom to pick your color and lay the sample on a table. Press down on it with your hand.
You'll feel that it's smoother/flatter than you expect.
