Pebble sheen - price & color upgrade price - help!

We are about to pull the trigger, and are getting the final final numbers from a couple of PBs. All are highly rated, great BBB reviews and many referrals.
I asked for an update to the quote, because the original had white diamond pebble sheen (at a cost of $6700), and we want Blue Granite. The price quoted by PB1 for the upgraded color was over $4000 in addition to the $6700! (In the meantime, PB2 said he'd throw in the $1500 upgrade to Blue Granite).

Is PB1 just trying to increase his profit now that he thinks we are ready to sign? Should we run away, or is this reasonable?

If pool builder 2 can do this for $1500 then pool builder 1 probably can also. But it appears he doesn't want to. If you try to negotiate the $4000 down, he'll most likely cut corners elsewhere. Were the two bids compatable before the change or was PB2 more expensive?

You should ask the PB why there is such a big difference. Are they both certified pebble sheen applicators - there are three tiers with colors, not sure why.....just another way to upcharge you.

The two bids are very comparable, but they are charging more and less for different things. I'm waiting for the final numbers from PB2. We'll see how they come out.

ARGH. Just want to make a decision, and start moving down the road. PB3 (small family firm with GREAT reputation) just reached out to say that they will not be able to start a new build before March, and we want to be swimming in late spring (if possible) so that's a no-go.

What PB2 charging for the basic plaster? If it $10K and hes upcharging u $1500, well you see.

It's impossible to compare PB1 and PB2 pricing on individual items. PB2 was MUCH higher on the basic pool, but itemized addons were MUCH lower. Opposite for PB1. And yet, total original quotes ended up almost identical. Go figure.

thats a LOT of money to UPGRADE pebble sheen. to I think the builder is building in profit....our upgrade cost was 1600 on a pool almost twice the size of your pool....

If prices are comparable, go with the builder you feel like you can communicate with and will LISTEN to you. If the pools wind up with comparable equipment and finished for the same price, then don't line item everything.
