Pavers or Concrete around Pool?

how do u figure. 1. it gives the proper base to properly attach a safety cover. 2. it prevents heaving in the weather. i can show someone a ton of jobs that were done with concrete under them and they are all prefect and some are old installs. yes i can also show the same without concrete, but most are not as good as concrete ones than those without. the only way you will get heaving with pavers on top of concrete is if the concrete below totally fails.

I have training and certification from the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute which is largely viewed as the authoritative North American Industry trade group on patio pavers. Concrete is not their recommendation for base material.

it works though. Never saw a job my buddy’s or my dad’s buddies have done that have failed and look like they did the day they were installed and that is a ton of jobs over a very very long period of years.

but just because they say it’s the right way doesn’t mean it’s the only way.

Our pavers are laid on concrete too. In fact the concrete base was poured as one with the pool shell. The pool rebar was also extended out all the way out for the decking. Essentially it is one complete structure. I have heard a properly prepared compacted base is the way to go with a concrete boarder but the operative word is properly. My pbs ability to do anything other than build pools is questionable so I was relieved to find out the pavers were going on concrete. We also have flexible grout between them rather than sand.

i went concrete cause my buddy and his older brother have 70 years of experience between them. The older brother is a mason who learned from my grandfathers generstoon from Italy. Was the head of his union for 30 plus years. Is to this day even though retired one of the most respected masons in our area. His kid brother owns a commercial excavation company but also does residential and is a concrete finisher and mason also. What they say gets done and they only do hem on concrete so that’s why mine r that way. I don’t know. First thing my builder said when he saw we were pouring was at least u are doing them right. And my builder was good.

I would definitely trust that sort of experience. My pb didn’t make mention of the base so I was curious. I think maybe different parts of the world/country have different standards and best practices. Very happy about mine been on a concrete base though.

I am certified icpi as well and concrete for a base is fine w use of fabric. If ur talking about glueing pavers to a slab that's different. If ur talking about a setting bed on the concrete u need a separator. What happens when the slab cracks and the bed falls into the voids? Ur pavers sink. I end up fixing or instructing others on the scratch ur head jobs. Even over native sub base or fill that's compacted u should use stabilizer fabric. It spans future voids and is like rebar for dirt. I use it on every paver job I have it under my whole pool my walkways even my driveway. Search YouTube for "how geotextile fabric works" there's a good video of a muddy pool fill in and an excavator b4 and after fabric u tell me after watching it

Most pavers get REALLY hot in direct sun. GEt the lightest color you can find, get a sample, and lay it out in your yard. Walk on it barefooted.... Travertine cost $$ but is cool.

If the budget allows, coral stone looks fantastic in florida. Its really really cool on the feet as well, and absorb water like a champ
