Owner Build W/ Rock Blasting - Loomis, CA - Equipment List HELP

Thanks for all the kind words! We cannot wait for it to be complete.

The pool is roughly 37,000 gal with an 800 gal spa, the spa has 6 jets.

Currently the plan is as follows:
- 3hp pump for the pool and waterslide, the slide has a 3" pipe feeding it and the manufacturer recommends 200gpm.
- 2hp pump for the spa and negative edge spillway
- 1hp pump for the scuppers
- 1hp pump for the bubblers

We are open to more efficient options if you have suggestions. We are definitely not a shareholder of PG&E (lol) and actually try to be the opposite with our PV solar system. haha

What are opinions on if we should we install the booster pump for a pressure side cleaner now vs in the future if we feel it is needed?

Below is the updated list:

I would forego the booster pump and plumbing all together... They are horribly inefficient and only do a mediocre job cleaning the pool.

You sure the slide requires 200 gpm? Your 3hp pump can not produce that kind of gallonage. Slides usually require very low flow, something like 20 gpm.

You won't find many fans on here of water powered cleaners. Robots do as good as or better job and in the end cost pennies a day to operate.

200 gpm is a huge volume of water in pool terms. That is four 55 gallon drums of water poured down the slide every minute. A lot of water. I would re confirm those specs. Most slides do well with a garden hose supplying water at low volume.

We are getting to the limits of my knowledge here but I have my suspicions this is not the most efficient arrangement. I'm going to ask the pump expert to come look at this.

Our water slide is almost 39' long and requires higher flow than a standard slide. I double checked and the plans call for 200 gpm with a 3 or 4" line feeding the slide. The slide has two 3" outlets at the top. I have sent the manufacturer (Paradise Water Slides) an email to check what the minimum flow recommendation is. What is the max flow on the 3hp pump?

Here are some details on the slide:

You'd be lucky to get 140-150gpm under very ideal circumstances. Pentair's largest waterfall pump is rated at 180 gpm. For a minimum of 200 gpm you are approaching a 5hp pump or one of their commercial versions.

For that kind of water flow I would want a dedicated pump, suction and return line without a filter out any other restrictions.

I still can't wrap my head around that kind of flow... You could probably swim under water down the slide.

The plumbing schematic is designed to reduce head loss from friction within the pipe run but restrict the flow enough at the discharge to prevent cavitation.

I spoke with Paradise Slides and they do recommend 200gpm but also said they believe installers typically use a 3hp pump. I also checked with Dolphin slides (similar style water slide manufacturer) and they recommend 125-150gpm.

It looks like the Pentair WhisperfloXF 3hp (model 022018) can produce excess of 200gpm. Would this be an inefficient pump to use as it is not variable speed?

Pooldv - Thanks for the input on the robot, Looks like a lot of people are happy with the Doheny's Discovery and I will likely go that route.

That would require about 3.5 kw to run but I doubt you would get more than about 155 GPM out of it even with 4" pipes.

Also, I think the 022018 uses a 3-phase motor. Do you have 3-phase power?

I haven't estimated the total energy usage for the pool. I originally wasn't too concerned with it because we over-sized our PV solar system when we installed it to accommodate for a pool. Last year we over produced and our electricity bill was $0 for the year. This year we are likely going to have a cost at the true up as we added onto the house and we will have the startup of the pool. The goal was to stay within tier 1 of PG&E but I am now starting to wonder if we planned correctly.

We have a 9.18KW system on our house.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

With the Holiday and family coming into town we didn't get the equipment ordered last week, I figured we could wait a week to see what Holiday sales we could take advantage of.

The 3hp will be for the slide only. Below is a revised equipment list showing separate pumps for the water slide, scuppers, bubblers, spa and pool. I am thinking the pool pump should be a variable speed (code requires minimum of 2 speed) whereas the others can be single? Please let me know if you see any issues with the list below. We are ordering this weekend so please let us know if you think we should change anything.

In other news, the slide arrived. It was slightly nerve racking unloading it from the back of an enclosed semi truck but we were able to get it all out in one piece.

Hopefully next week with some clear weather we can make some more progress on the pool.

Northern California has been hit with a ton of rain lately causing our plaster to be delayed until this past weekend. We were excited to keep the project moving forward, unfortunately everything didn't go as planned!

We decided to us Quartzscapes:
- Barbados for the pool and spa (spa has abalone)
- Cappuccino (tan) for the shelf.

Our pool had a lot of rain water in it and that was pumped out on Thursday, Friday they arrived and pumped out a little more water and plastered the cabo shelf area tan (sand color).

Saturday morning they arrived, pumped out some more water, sealed around the lights, pipes and a few areas where water was weeping through the gunite. They started to plaster and everything appeared to be going smooth until they started the bottom of the pool. Water started weeping through the bottom making it difficult for the plaster to adhere. They had propane torches trying to try it out, they removed the plaster, added "water stop" and tried to re apply the plaster. Nothing seemed to make the water stop. They left around 9:30pm and said they would be back to fix on Sunday.

Sunday morning they arrived and started working the area with the propane torches and had a larger pump to relieve the ground water pressure. By the afternoon they felt it was sealed and started to acid wash, followed by filling with water. I asked about the large mark and they said with acid and time it will blend in (I doubted it would every be completely).

Last night I went out and found that the areas they "sealed" were again leaking. I am now very concerned that the pool will leak on top of the eye sore of the areas they tried to fix. I called the guys and they were back out today to observe. They agreed that the bottom and sides will need to be re-plastered and want to wait until the ground dries out (a few months/early summer) to do it and said we can keep it full until then. They said the process to replaster the bottom and blend the sides will be to sand blast and then apply a bonding agent so the new plaster will adhere to the old.

I would like to get feedback and will take any and all advice. Below are pictures.

We are disappointed to have come this far and have this result. The crew we had did a great job on the other areas of the pool and spa and we believe it would have been a great finish if this water issue didn't arise.

Pool with rain water from the last storm, it was pumped out prior to the storm arriving:

Late last night, Water still coming through the plaster

I have such a sad for you right now :( That HAS to be redone. I also think it needs to be redone when the ground has had a chance to dry up BUT do worry about there being future problems when it rains hard again.

I would see about getting a system as seen in this link:

Well Points and Dealing with Groundwater | EverClear Pool and Backyards

Do you have the fact they said they WILL be redoing the plaster in writing?

Kim (no cheering for this one)
