Overwhelmed with pump sizing

I have a cracked volute on my pool pump. The replacement part is $215 and the pump is pretty old, so at that price I am looking at new pumps instead. However, the more I read about sizing a pump and head and flow rates the more confused I get. I'm hoping someone here can help me.

My current pump motor is 1 HP, but the label on the basket says 1 1/2 HP, so I'm thinking the motor was replaced at some point. To be honest I am not happy with my current flow rate. It has always seemed too low. When my heater was working I couldn't get it to run due to low flow while filtering, even with a clean filter. I have a cousin who works for a pool builder and he is suggesting a Whisperflo (not just trying to sell me something as he suggested I'll likely get a better deal online than through him). He also suggested 1 1/2 HP since that is what it appears it was using originally.

Some plumbing details:
Pipe size is 1.5 inch
2 skimmers and 1 drain run in parallel to pad.
Single return pipe to 3 eyeballs to pool.
DE filter, I believe it is 36 sq ft. Says max flow is 72.
Old propane heater that doesn't currently work but is still hooked up.

Skimmer 1: 25 ft of pipe, 5 90s
Skimmer 2: 70 ft of pipe, 5 90s
Drain: 44 ft of pipe, 5 90s
3 suction pipes are joined in a 4 way cross.
9 ft of pipe at pad, 8 90s and 2 45s.
About 110 ft of return pipe, 4 90s, and 2 tees.

Had to kind of guess where and how the underground pipe is laid out as I have no real idea. Length estimates include horizontal and vertical pipes.

I don’t know the answer to this question but there are some folks who probably do. Hang tight and I’m sure you will have some sort of answers soon.

That psi indicates your pump is well matched to the filter and you SHOULD be getting a very nice gpm flow from the system. Why do you think the flow is weak?

It is a 1 HP pump but the service factor of 1.4 brings it up to 1 1/2 HP....confusing, I know.

There could be a couple things going on, when the motor was replaced the impeller was not adjusted properly and or damaged. A full rated 1 hp should have a service factor of 1.65 but 1.4 is close. Seems to me the motor is small for a 1.5 HP impeller only way to know for sure is to look and see if you can get a part # off the impeller. If you're looking to replace a Pentair Superflo VS would be a good replacement

Your previous psi was probably greater. a psi of 8 indicates a pretty high flow volume. I suspect if you reduced the size of the eyeball fittings it would feel more "normal" to you.

Your psi will go up but you won't produce any more flow.....a little less, in fact.

Just a note that we typically recommend cleaning a filter when the pressure Rises 20 to 25% above the clean pressure. Sounds like you have already raised 25% and should clean your filter.

I did just have the pump apart to replace the shaft seal and I snapped a picture of the impeller. Didn't think to look for a part number though. Don't know ignore you can tell anything from the pic but here it is.

I don't remember exactly my previous PSI as it's been a few years, but I do remember it was quite a bit higher. So is it normal to not be able to run a heater while filtering due to low flow?

Yep! I know I am due.
