We originally had a 24 foot Intex power steel pool that needed to be taken down due to age. We loved having a pool and decided to buy a new 24 foot round hard sided pool for a longer lasting more permanent installation. Our original Intex pump ended up breaking last season so we decided to go bigger. The old one wasn't providing enough suction anyway. And down the rabbit hole we went. We bought a single speed 1.5 horse pump rated at 106gpm that was in sale at the time. We didn't realize that it was too powerful for our 19 inch pentair pool filter. I think that's why it was sucking air through our single inlet skimmer. Also the 10 year old sand filtered developed a pinhole. Realizing the error we decided to go bigger on the sand filter as well. We bought a 26" sand filter that uses 360lbs of sand and splurged a little on an inline chlorinator. The chlorinator and sand filter are scheduled to arrive on Saturday and I need to get it up quickly before our pool starts to turn green.

But looking at the order the sand filter we bought is only rated at 72gpm. Will this be a problem when we plumb everything back together? I really don't want to return. Everything. We can't really return the pump because it's already hard piped in.

Welcome to TFP.

Are you hard piping your oversized equipment?

Put a diverter valve between your pump and filter so you can choke down the pump flow if it is too much for the filter and blows sand into the pool.
