overflow pipe

Overflow pipe may be glued in, be careful. If it isn't, the pool will instantly start to drain when the pipe is removed. Better to get a piece of what appears to be 1" PVC, cut it to length, and have it ready to put in place of the pipe you have so as to not lose too much water (very precious in California).
 
It looks like it might be a tight fit but you might also get a PVC cutter if you think it'd fit in there and cut it in place. Maybe at a slight angle ?
They are available at Harbor Freight, big box stores or local hardware stores. + - $10.
