overflow pipe

We just gor our first big rain since the pool has been finished. The water seems very high, almost to the top, but water is still a couple inches from going into the overflow pipe. Can I take the pipe out and cut it down a couple inches?

Overflow pipe may be glued in, be careful. If it isn't, the pool will instantly start to drain when the pipe is removed. Better to get a piece of what appears to be 1" PVC, cut it to length, and have it ready to put in place of the pipe you have so as to not lose too much water (very precious in California).

It looks like it might be a tight fit but you might also get a PVC cutter if you think it'd fit in there and cut it in place. Maybe at a slight angle ?
They are available at Harbor Freight, big box stores or local hardware stores. + - $10.
