Outlet Pipe for Polaris Booster Pump - Metal or Plastic?

I went to change the housing on my Polaris booster pump for the pool sweep, and noticed that the pump outlet pipe screwed into the pump housing is metal rather than plastic. This metal pipe is going into plastic on both ends, the pump housing and the pipe fitting. It looks like the pipe might be steel. Is this the correct material to use? Every other pipe is plastic in the pool equipment system. It seems like this metal pipe would be a source of corrosion, but maybe it needs to be metal for strength? I'm not sure..

That does not sound like the way the PB4 pump installation manual says to connect it. Did you put a magnet on the pipe and confirm it is metal?

The recommended way is illustrated below. Post a pic of what you have.

That was a good idea using the magnet. I did not get any magnetic force, so I guess it is probably plastic. It just looked like metal. I'm going to go ahead and take it apart.
