Out of control PH

My gunite pool was completed in late September and I have been maintaining my water chemistry using the Pool Math app (great tool by the way!). I have been able to keep everything fairly stable except for PH. It continually runs around 8 to 8.2. Each week I add muriatic acid to being it back down to around 7.6 and within a week it is back to 8. Is this normal? I am going through a lot of acid and want to make sure this isn’t a sign of something else that I should be addressing.

Salt water pool but I removed the SWG last week and have started using liquid bleach for chlorine during the winter months.

Hey Ant !!! All pools being different and whatnot, most new plaster jobs can expect a PH rise while it cures for 6 or even 12 months. So no worries there. It’ll should calm down eventually.

Plus, as folks tire of their aerating features like waterfalls/bubblers, the PH rise calms down there too. They still use them, but not like when it’s all fun new toys.

A high TA will also pull-up the PH as said above, but those usually lower over time by simply managing the PH.

TA is at 80.

@new dude. Thanks for the feedback. I don’t have any water features so that wouldn’t be a factor. I had read about new pools dealing with this but wanted to make sure it wasn’t out of the norm. I never thought I would have to put in acid every week.

Let your TA get down to 50-60. Don't go raising your TA.

Antneye, my pool was plastered end of Oct, my TA is 80 as well, and I've had to put MA in on average every 4 days so once a week sounds good to me!

Thanks. Pool Math says 60-80 is ideal. I am letting it drop as I keep addressing PH. It was 90 at one point.

My TA is 60-70 and I’ve had to add very little acid after the first couple of weeks (plastered in November). Maybe 6oz a week at the most. I’ve let the pH stay a little higher (7.9) though and only add acid to keep CSI at ideal values. This time of year it’s not a bad idea to let your pH creep up a little bit if it helps keep your CSI neutral.

Pool Math says 60-80 is ideal.

50-60 will be even more ideal for your pool. Let your TA find its happy place.
