Our green monster! oh no!

AllMar, looking back at post #96, I have to follow-up with a couple things:
- Since implementing the use of paper towels or anything else you have placed in the skimmer, is there any change in the color of the towels/matting material?
- Have you been able to physically remove any of the debris (pennies, can(s), etc) from the pool?

Discoloration (brownish) on the towels might help confirm your concern about metal since the pool store didn't seem to be much help. Removing any debris from the water (physically or via rake/netting) is really important to help reduce stress on the FC (bleach) so it can focus on the organic battle. I would leave no part of the pool untouched by a broom, net, rake, atc). Lastly, I just keyed-in on what you said about the previous owner. Oh my. We can only imagine how long that pool remained in a complete state of disarray without any attention at all for what? Months? Years? Amazing. I'm not surprised your water is taking so long to show improvement, but hang in there. It didn't get that way in a short time, so it will take a while to clear. Consistency in SLAM maintenance and personal patience will ultimately succeed. If auxiliary products (i.e. Metal Magic or Floc) are required, it will be quite obvious to the viewers who have been following. Good luck!

Yes we originally got out the can, then after all the muck we started getting the pennies as far as we can tell there is not anything left on the bottom. We used leaf rake net and scooped it full of muck for 2 days straight... Started brushing and scooping next then started adding bleach..after test kit arrived we began to SLAM with what we thought was a good number as the really cloudy water was hard to get accurate cya so we followed advice on tfp and assumed 40.. We have maintained a min of 16 and a max of 24 fc since..cya now is actually 30..also reading at pool store..I tested TA today and still got 100...

Very good :goodjob: Keep-up the great work. Even if you don't think the water is changing all that much, it probably is. I've heard (by some reliable sources here) that with the right amount of crushed ice and tropical drink flavoring, you can sit by the pool during a late sunset and see it change many, many colors. :) You'll get there.

I've quickly skimmed this thread and I'd like to call time out. Let's try to return this thread to the basics and cover those first before we jump into other issues such as metals and skimmer issues. Very seldom does green/cloudy water mean anything but algae. Before we go chasing other issues, lets make sure we are 100% sure that the water is completely clean and everything is dead. For starters, can you please post a complete set of current test results using your own FAS/DPD Test. Please include,

  • FC
  • CC
  • pH
  • TA
  • CYA
  • CH

Very strong odds say there is something simple we are missing in assisting you to clear your pool. Let's start at square one and work from there.

Ok sorry I am painting and hubby is doing de and mowing grass.. Took me a second to get it done.. Ok..

FC 14.5 have not added more bleach just yet. Held at 17 overnite has been hot and sunny here today. No shade at all on this pool.
CC .5 has been for several days now.. Very pale tinge of pink, 1 drop clears it..
Ph 7.2 from previous reading before high chlorine
TA 100 I just retested
CYA 30 added to 20 and still looked same, no dot past 30.
CH 150 it turned a hot pink color then 4 drops made it bright blue..

Ok, perfect! Thank you!!

Nothing that are in those numbers concern me. All appears normal in honesty. With your filter it's very likely it will simply take some time to clear this mess. I wouldn't suggest adding any new items to "rush" this process. The water took some time to turn this green, it's going to take some time to change to blue. Keep your FC above 12 and keep back flushing as you have been. You will get this!

Ok thank you as well.. There is very small improvement I think.. My hubby on the other hand thinks I'm crazy! Lol not the first time..so you think fc of 12 is OK now..we have been shooting for 16 + for so long not sure I will remember to just stick with 12..

I know that this is a bit off subject, but in the interest of trying to help clear the water in your pool, have you thought about looking on Craigslist for someone that is getting rid of their pool so that you might find a bigger sand filter or even a cartridge one from an aboveground pool. If you got the pump system with it you could have both systems running even if the second one was just temporary with hoses. It might be a way to help out the filter system you have. Sometimes you can get the whole pool for free, if you are willing to go take it down.

Good luck,
Tim

Will their filter be able to handle the increased load? I've been holding off suggesting anything because of that...
Not a good idea if there is still green in the water.

It's my understanding that the filter will be on recirculate for a short while to mix the floc in the water. The filter is then turned off to allow the particles to settle then vacuum to waste.
