I have a Mastertemp 400 at a home we purchased a couple of months ago. It's about 10 years old. A nearby lightning strike damaged some of the pool equipment recently. The circuit boards in the EasyTouch and wireless link both had to be replaced and the surge bricked the heater. I replaced the blown fireman's fuse and bypassed the EasyTouch but it did not power up.
I had a local pool company out last week and the tech swapped in a new transformer but got nothing. He then plugged in a different control panel, and still no power. At that point, he basically stopped any troubleshooting and suggested replacement was the best route. His explanation was that if replacing those two parts didn't bring it back online, there is probably substantial damage throughout that would require replacing a number of parts. And since the heater is ~10 years old it would be risky to spend that much in repairs.
The one thing he didn't swap or seem to test is the ignition module. I'm curious about other's opinions on moving forward with replacement vs. attempting to repair my self? I don't have a multimeter, but could get one to run through some testing I found in previous posts.
My main concern is that even if replacing all three of those electronic pieces (transformer, control board, ignition module) got it running, is there likely to be other damage that could be dangerous or make failure imminent?
I haven't got the quote for replacement yet, but sounded like he expected it to be $4k+. Thanks for the input.
