Hi TFP gang,

First time pool owner! I've gone through a bunch of trouble and steps so far (under the guidance of the local pool store too) and am thankful I've found this forum to finally start attacking this pool the right way. Some quick background - recently purchased a new-to-me home and the pool there has not been opened in roughly 2 years. The cover was ripped and there was a TON of leaves, debris, and algae when I took the cover off about 2 weeks ago. The pump was dead, old, and I was told un-serviceable; I ended up purchasing a new pump/filter.

What I've done so far:
  • Pool store told me to dump 4 gallons of liquid chlorine (12.5%) and brush/vacuum/clean filter religiously until clear water
    • I did this on Tuesday evening. The progress on Weds morning was great, but since then I have not really seen major improvement
  • At this point, most of the leaves/debris has been removed but there are likely still small amounts I just can't see at the bottom - getting more of it daily as I brush and vacuum
  • I only have test strips at the moment to test my water chemistry and noticed FC had dropped to zero on Weds evening
    • We had some really strong sun that day along with all of the algae fighting it had to do - so I assume that's why it all depleted
    • I have now been trying to just maintain a high indicated level matching the color somewhere between 10-20ppm indicated on the strips to at least keep new algae growth at bay
  • CYA was zero, pool store told me not to put any in until after the water was clear - it seems this is hurting me because the sun is also draining whatever FC I have in the pool
    • Today I am using the sock method - dangling it in front of my one return and squeezing every once in a while
    • I was only given a 1.5lbs of the stabilizer by the pool store, which should get me to about 30 ppm CYA
  • I have a TF-100 kit on order, but it's not coming in until 7/7
    • I am using the Hach Aquachek 7 test strips in the meantime which claim to read up to 20 ppm of FC on the label
Before starting to use any chlorine/chemicals the pool store tested my water as follows:
FC: 0
PH: 6.2
TA: 20
CH: 100
CYA: 0

I am hoping there is something I can do to keep progress going in the right direction while I wait for the TF-100 kit. I have tested 3x today and the FC seems to not drop dramatically like it did 1-2 days ago.

I started this project with the water at a very dark green and nearly impossible to see through it. The water is now significantly more blue with better visibility properties but still very cloudy. What are my best next steps for now while I wait for the TF-100 kit?

Thank you!

Welcome to TFP :)

You are all over it... Most of the time we tell people to pour a gallon of liquid chlorine in the pool every day and continue to pull as much out of the pool as you can.. this will keep it from getting worse..

the guess strips are not accurate and you really do not want to go over 12 FC in a pool with CYA at 30.. with that said you are not swimming in the pool so The way you are doing it right now I would keep doing...

Once you receive the TF100 you can officially start your SLAM Process Once you start the SLAM only measure FC and CC, the more you test the faster it goes.. I test every 2 hours and add chlorine.. :)

Welcome to TFP!

The posts above have you pointed in the right direction. I will add, when you test for free chlorine, if FC is below 10 ppm then test pH and adjust pH to 7.2 before beginning SLAM. If FC is above 10 ppm pH test will not be reliable.

OK will do. Should I worry about any of the other problems (low alkalinity/calcium hardness) or just focus on pH (if <10 ppm FC) and FC/CC for now until I complete the SLAM process?

One more question for now! My pump has 2 speeds and I've just been running it at the high speed (3450rpm) 24x7. The low speed is (1725rpm). Should I keep it running @ high throughout this process?

I'd say until the kit arrives you can run low speed, once you know what you have for the slam I'd say full speed but most importantly is to watch the PSI gauge on the filter. With that much algae in the water it can clog filters and cause a higher pressure.

I always ran it on low unless I was vacuuming.. Low is still high enough to move lots of water and your filter will work better in trapping crud... and your pocket book will be happier :)

When your at the end of the SLAM and you think the water should clear faster you can get some DE and add it to your filter to raise the PSI in your filter 1 PSI.. You will have to watch the filter because the PSI will rise FAST... do not use it now, only when almost clear pool

Still waiting for the kit, but trying as best I can to keep the SLAM going with the strips is going really well! Thought I'd post a progress photo - the clarity is really coming in! I can even see little leaves on the bottom of the pool now.

Got the kit a day early yesterday but it was pouring all evening. Also missing the reagent needed to measure CC due to supply issues so for now I'm only going to be keeping track of FC and CYA until they are able to send it over to me. Very hot and sunny today!

1:50PM -> measured FC at 11.5ppm
3:45PM -> measured FC at 10ppm and CYA at 20ppm (dot is visible at 30, barely visible at 20 but still technically visible)

According to the CYA/FC chart - I should just stick to the 10ppm for SLAM. Good? Otherwise, pool is looking great today - even more clarity to the bottom compared to yesterday.

Should I try raising the CYA to 30 to help with the sun burn-off or not bother for now and just keep FC in check?

Just wanted to give a final update to close the thread out - I am shocked that I was able to go from a swamp to a crystal clear pool. It really is that simple...thanks a ton!
