Re: Ool Newbie - Notice there's no "P" in it?

Once you figure out the CYA level and make sure the PH is right then you will be able to get a ballpark figure for the free chlorine level to shoot for to kill all that algae from this chart:

http://www.troublefreepool.com/content/128-chlorine-cya-chart-slam-shock

And this web table:

http://www.troublefreepool.com/calc.html

For example: (and this is JUST an example) if your CYA is at 50, per the chart you would need to get your Free Chlorine up to and held at 20 to start SLAMing it.

Do the CYA test next.

For a more accurate CYA reading, run the pool water through a coffee filter before testing it to remove the heavy particulates in your water which can throw off the CYA results.

I think you'll be fine for your CYA test without the extra filtering. :) I was reading about some debate on whether or not the coffee filter has be proven to make a difference.

For the chlorine test (FC) Are you saying the water did not turn pink when you first put in the powder? (Just double checking) :)

Did you put in the scoop of powder first?

Steps are, fill chlorine only vial to 10ml. Put in 1 heaping scoop of the powder, the water should turn pink for that.

Then you add drops 1 at a time until it goes back to no color.

You divide the number of drops in half to get your fc. For example 6 drops would be 3FC.

I'm sorry. I'm at work and typing on the phone and the manager is noticing that my lunch break should be over! Someone will help you. (Search extended test kit instructions) on the forum for more in depth explanation. There are also you tube videos for Tf-100.

P.s. very good for your cya to not be through the roof! I'll jump back on here on my next break. :-\

Re: Ool Newbie - Notice there's no "P" in it?

Also went the test strip route for poops and hahas (Boss man has a pool and has a pool boy now who does all his testing for him) and here's what IT reads:

PH: 8.4
FC: 0
Alk: 240
Stabilizer: 100-150

yes water, then powder = water still clear

If your stabilizer (CYA) is that high then you will really need to loose/replace a lot of water in order to get it down to a reasonable level. Side note, a CYA result that high would be why all the "shock" that the pool man dumped into the pool wouldn't be able to get the organics to float. The stabilizer was neutralizing your chlorine.

To get a better CYA reading you might want to dilute the pool water 50/50 with tap water and then multiply your final result by 2 for the correct result. (it will also help you use less reagents)
