Raypak 360k btu Jandy RS2300. (20 years old). Just started happening. Heater comes on with remote demand. Spa set to 104. Temperature on heater control panel gets to 94 degrees. Heater flips to No remote demand and LED on Jandy turns off. Pressing Heater button on the Jandy at this point has no effect. (THIS IS ALL IN SERVICE MODE)

heater is about 5 or 6 years old. Jandy control is, as mentioned, 20+ years old. I am thinking my Jandy is goingbad

I know what a Jandy Aqualink RS is. What is a Jandy RS2300?

What does the Jandy say the spa temperature is when the heater shuts off?

SPA heat set point set to 104
Heater control panel says it is 94
Jandy spa temperature display is ???

Since I am in service mode there is no display on Jandy control

RS2300 is the model number of the aqualink

more info

running in normal mode. Used laser thermometer and checked temp of pipes and filter exterior. Shows 78 panel on heater shows 78. Jandy control shows 88

also found that spa temp was set to 99 on Jandy control panel Allowing for discrepancies in calibration I can see why the heat shut off in service mode

thinking maybe my water temp sensor is flaky

So I didn’t have to run from back of yard to the garage where the control is to ‘observe’ what happens. Wanted to watch real time as heat progressed to set temp and when the demand shut off

initial issue was turned on heat cause grandkids were coming over to swim. temp was set to 92. Ran heater overnight in normal mode in the morning it showed 92. When kids got in they complained it was cold. Heater showed idle on control and 92 degrees

went to heater and IT showed water temp at 83. Turned on spa in service mode to watch. It warmed up to 94 and demand shut off. mostly just making sure the heater kicked in

as i mentioned this morning checked the water temp(pipes and filter exterior) and that showed 78 which coincides with reading on the heater panel

tried to calibrate the water sensor but could only get it to read 86 where water temp is 78

ordered new sensors from amazon. Be here tomorrow

When you say that you are taking temperature readings using a laser thermometer, I assume that you mean an IR "gun" type thermometer that uses a laser to pinpoint the center of the area that the reading is taken from. You must realise that the area that the temperature reading is taken from is a cone shaped area that expands as distance from the "gun" increases. You must also take into account the emissivity correction that needs to applied for the material upon which you are taking the reading from to get an accurate reading and this can vary greatly between different materials. Then you must take into account the thermal conductivity of the material because if you are taking your readings on the PVC piping, the thickness of the piping and thermal conductivity of PVC can also throw your readings accuracy off. The most accurate sensing of water temperature is achieved using a thermister inserted into the water itself

Not really worried about an exact to hundredth of a degree reading. One or two degrees variance is really ok with me. But using my cheap harbor freight red laser dot thermometer, the temps on the outside of the filter housing and the pvc pipes is pretty spot on with the temperature readings on the heater console readout. Maybe a half degree difference

But thanks for the explanation

And I am thinking that my (I am assuming) thermistor temperature sensor, in pipe, is defective. It is reading 10 degrees higher than everything else

Replaced the temp sensors. Had to clear memory on Jandy. Water sensor was showing 28 instead of 82 degrees. At least now the Jandy and heater agree on temperature. Will kick on heater in AM to see if it does what it should

Final update. Pool set to 90. Heater on this morning and it has hit that temp. Problem either bad sensor or Jandy memory needed reset. I changed the sensor and did a memory reset and all seems well. Thanks for the comments
