Old pool black algae

Looking for serious help :( definitely going to be selling our house because we can’t afford the pool. That being said we need new plaster and tile work and just had a baby so paying that baby off first is priority. What do you do when you can no longer maintenance the pool? We drained the pool from the winter and the entire pool plaster is covered in scales and black algae. It’s stained and I don’t know what to do? Should I refill and try to keep it going?

Well, first .. congrats on your baby! As for the pool, you should never leave it empty for very long at all. Several factors become a concern like a locally high water table, exposed plaster to the TX sun, ground shifting, etc. Not good, and any one of those could result in much higher costs later. Since the pool is empty, you could ask around for someone who can do a quick cleaning, but they would have to be careful due to the nature of the decayed plaster. If not an acid wash, perhaps a good chlorine wash then fill it back up. Keep the water balanced with your TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C test kit. If you don't have one, you really need one. The cost of that test kit will keep the water pristine and pay for itself when you sell the home. If you don't test properly and let it turn to a green swamp, it will be an eyesore to buyers. Just a little cosmetic work and you can really showcase that thing off to your advantage. But don't wait too long for all those reasons I mentioned above. Good luck!

Thank you Texas splash I called around today but didn’t get really any useful info :( I do want to do a quick chlorine bath tomorrow and use a puck to and see if I can knock off any of that black algae. What are some good do-it-yourself extras that a home owner could do to shine up this pool?
