ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – An Anderson County Hazmat team along with firefighters from the Homeland Park Fire Department responded to a home after an explosion occurred on Saturday.

Officials said that they responded to a home along Abbeville Highway near Clinkscales Road regarding the explosion just after 1 p.m.

According to officials, the residents were mixing chemicals for their pool in a bucket in their kitchen sink. According to hazmat, the chemicals were inappositely mixed and not meant to be put together which caused the loud explosion.

Hazmat said the violent explosion of chlorine gas started to spread chemicals throughout the kitchen. The residents then ran outside and jumped into the pool to get the chemicals off of them.

Officials said that EMS transported three people to the hospital and their conditions are unknown at this time.

The Homeland Park Fire Department, Anderson County Hazmat, and EMS all responded to the scene.

When I used to use trichlor tabs I once accidentally (wasn't thinking) breathed in right after I opened the container, not fun - was paranoid every time thereafter to breathe anywhere near an open container. I would open the lid and walk away for about 5 minutes; made sure my dog(s) weren't outside when I opened the container. Same thing when I opened the chlorinator. That left me to be paranoid when I read I needed to use muriatic acid to lower pH. This year I was adding washing soda to my pool to raise pH and Alk, there was a big clump of it so I took it out of the box, stuck my hand in the water and I felt the clump heat up - I thought that was interesting.

Accidents happen unfortunately; my washing soda incident could have been more severe than a little heat, I was clueless that it would heat up.

We went to the store on Sunday to pick up some liquid chlorine because the SWG cell wore out. I decided to also grab a gallon of muriatic acid to have on hand. Then on the car ride home, I started envisioning "what if the cap of each thing decides to vent??" because I hadn't thought to not put them next to each other in the back of the wagon.

Thankfully, everything was just fine.

I did a similar thing when brewing beer - once.

I had a fermentation going, and wanted to smell how it was coming along. I took the top off my fermenter, stuck my face in, and inhaled a good dose of CO2. Not pleasant.

Never did that again.

I saw this and thought to myself - who in their right mind would let their kid play in a pile limestone powder?!? But, then again, it basically looks like chalk dust and anyone not knowing the dangers could think it was harmless.

All chemicals need to be handled with care, even the ones that seem most innocuous…

I ride with my windows open when I go for a new propane tank - I want to make sure no chance of a gas explosion. I was in my 20s when a propane tank exploded in NYC and if I remember correctly it took out a block and did damage to the surrounding area. When I lived in a townhouse development in their by-laws they had a blurb that we needed a fire extinguisher close by ... those little Kidde ones won't do nothing.

I’m guessing that the gas explosions during the ride aren’t from the propane tank … 🕺💨

:ROFLMAO:

Take note if you need to increase your CH. The same will happen if you put calcium chloride in a bucket of water. Don't stick your hand in it. You should always add calcium chloride directly to a pool.
