Done! Figured Oak, 2/3 lift out trays, top storage, hidden compartment, cast iron hardware, Brusso hinges, brass lockset. Finished in clear Danish oil and top-coated with satin polyurethane.

This is for my son. He has been asking for a "treasure" chest for awhile and also a phone. So I will give him this for Christmas along with a phone hidden in the secret compartment. After he opens it and is looking at it, I'll call the phone. Then he'll have to figure out how to get in the hidden compartment. It'll be epic!

The bottom panel is spring loaded. Remove the tray to the right, push the panel to the right and lift out of the slot on the left. He's 13.
