Nudge pH up or leave it alone? Checking in with my current parameters.

Here’s where I’m at now…

FC 8
CC zero or close to it
pH 7.3
TA 120
CC 150
CYA 60

How am I doing? My pH has been inching down. Was about 7.8 a week ago. Should I be adding some Borax or Soda Ash at this point or leave it alone? In general do you wait for pH to get OUT of range, say 7.1 or 7.9 to do something about it, or do you proactively try to nudge it back toward 7.4-7.6 when it drifts anywhere above or below?

All I’ve been doing is periodically checking and making sure FC is up in range and adding liquid chlorine every couple days or so to maintain. Got CYA from 90 to 60 doing a bunch of partial water drain and refills over the course of a week or so.

Keep an eye on it for now. Interesting it's falling with a a TA of 120 that should allow it to rise easily. And you're not using anything acidic in the pool like chlorine tablets? Have you been adding water lately? If so, have you tested the pH of that fill water? Perhaps it's very low and that's why. If the pH hits 7.2, you might look into creating some aeration. Any bubbles generated in the water like that will help increase the pH but eave the TA alone.

Definitely no tablets! Scout's honor. lol. My town tap water is generally thought of as pretty ideal, but I'm going to test it like you suggested. I had a couple rainy days that could have caused it to drop a bit. I did do some refilling at the end of last week to get that CYA down to 60. But probably a total of about 5 or 6 inches at the most out of the 48" total depth. I'll let you know about the tap water, and I'll keep an eye on the pH level.

I do have 2 lbs. Sodium Carbonate pH Up on hand if needed. (Does that expire? I never opened it and it's from last season, stored in my garage).

Over the weekend though, I'm going to point my return jet up to hopefully aerate and see what that gets me.

If you haven't opened it, and the bag is undamaged, it's almost certainly fine.

Do yourself a favor after you go through that bag and use regular baking soda to raise your pH when needed. It works just as well, and you don't pay the branded-pool-chemical premium.
I've read that baking soda does much more to raise TA which is already on the high side for me. (Currently at 120). ...and that it doesn't affect pH as much. The Pool Math app confirms this as well. Is that not the case?

I need more coffee. That is the case. Always trust PoolMath over a knucklehead like me.

Finally tested my tap water. 7.2 pH out of the tap. The amount I refilled should not have dragged it from 7.8 to 7.3, but maybe that combined with the rain? In any case the pool has been holding at 7.3. Doesn’t seem to be moving anymore. Not in the last few days at least.

Fill water and rain stratify (sit on the top). Unless you allowed 24 hours with pump running, and sampled from 18" deep, you likely just pulled water from the top strata and have erroneous results...

I’ve tested every day for the last few days and haven’t filled or had rain in days. Pump runs 12-14 hours a day. So that’s not it.
