I have a 4200 gal above ground pool. It has a leak & I have to add about 300 gal every 14-ish days. I fill from city water, using a tank which used to hold agave syrup, but it's been bleached and probably had 25 loads of water through it. Also have some dirt issues, I think mostly blowing in from our field, a few willow leaves but we usually get those out fast.
Have 2 pumps, the original .07 HP & a slightly stronger/older Krystal Clear Model 635 which I just started using, the hoses just float around.
The pool ran fine for about 2 months. We purchased a flipping frog and got behind on chlorine (travel, we thought the frog would take care of it, etc). I started to see some green and started brushing and cleaning more. Went to the pool store and they rec I add 1 bag of bioguard smart shock (63.05% sodium dichloro-s-trazinetrione, .73% copper citrate) - not sure how big the bag was. Then wait 1 day and add a 2nd bag.
Bag 1 was 8/3, bag 2 was 8/5. The pool turned GREEN. I ordered the TF-100 and brushed, vacuumed, cleaned the filters and added some of the super soluble chlorine I had left over from the pool store (about a capful per day because I was guessing at chlorine levels, just wanted to keep it up until the green left) and I kept up with the Ph staying below 7.6
About 8/7 the pool went cloudy. I still get small green plumes when I brush, but mostly from what I think is dead algae falling to the floor, the plumes aren't coming from the walls. I'm going to get on top of vacuuming tomorrow.
Today 8/10 it is clearing up a bit, still a little cloudy. I'm not seeing a green tint though. I'll take a picture tomorrow and add.
Ph 7.2
FC 29
CC 2
Calcium & Alkalinity I messed up, going to do those again tomorrow
CYA: I did 3 times, 75 60 65. I think the 65 is most accurate but either way it's still very high
Is the CYA high enough that I should just drain the pool (fix my leak on the way) and refill? It's a serious PITA to refill - 15 miles round trip to fill up the water tank. It took us 2 days of tag teaming to fill last time and we were exhausted. Our well can't handle that kind of load.
How did CYA get this high? The flippin frog or those 2 bags of shock? I plan to test water straight out of the fill tank next time just to see if that is the issue, but can't access it at the moment due to dawn of the yellow jackets.
With the CYA being that high, is it a good sign that the clarity is slowly improving? So maybe it's lower than I think?
It was dark when I tested the FC and I'm going to do my best to get up before the sun tomorrow to at least check that again to see if there was any overnight loss. Anything else I should be checking on/adding/removing.
