Ok, so ya it is another VS pump question. lol I apologize. But is has to have been at least 5 minutes since you guys have seen this question. I have searched past threads, made phone calls and tried to educated myself on which would be the best pump to get but I am still confused. The basics: 35000 gallon 18x42 rectangular pool with ugh....1.5 inch pipes. I have no idea on the pools age as it was there when I bought the home. I would LOVE to go with 2 inch but the access is extremely difficult with some under a concrete slab. My current pump is a 1.5hp Pentair Superflo single speed. The power company loves me so much my monthly present is getting to be in excess of 500 a month. Last month I was at 2900kwh use and I googled to see what the average household consumption is and it is like 900kwh. I have a decent size house and 3 kids that think every light in the house needs to be on. But I know a good chunk of that 2900 is the dang pump that I have running 24/7 especially during the summer when it is in full use. In the off season I usually run it 12-15 hrs a day. So I would love to upgrade to a VS pump but which one? I also have a 7 panel solar heater but I basically never use it. I have found if I use a bubble cover I go through a lot less chlorine, get good heating and lose a lot less water. So I haven't run the solar in a few years. I don 't know the dynamic head but hopefully I can get some educated guesses here as to what pump would be the best option. I have read that if I go with a 3hp VS pump that will be WAY too many ponies at full speed. Maybe I would be ok to have it and never run wfo? I have also read I better have at least 10 inches of 2 inch pipe before the intake? I'm not sure what that does? That is doable as the pump sits about 3 feet below the water surface and is easy access. I have a sand filter and this is a chlorine pool. I use liquid 90 percent of the time due to a prior fiasco with elevated CYA. I have a low producing well and when I had my epic algae bloom years ago I had to put in about a grand worth of trucked in water to get rid of the CYA. Anyway.... I have explored just replacing the motor with a Pentair VS motor. I see on the Inyopools website you can buy a VS Pentair motor kit they say will be a perfect interface with my existing Superflo, but when I called Pentair they claim this is not going to work. I'm not sure if the person I talked to was mistaken, they prefer I buy a whole new pump, or if they are right. But just that VS motor is more expensive than an entire Dohenys VS pump. I get so much conflicting info calling the manufactures and the stores. It is enough to drive me to drink. Not that I need a ton of motivation there. I called Dohenys yesterday as I like the price of their VS pumps on sale and the lady I spoke with only wanted to know my pool gallon size. Nothing else. She insisted I needed their 3 hp pump. Which is fine.....if that indeed will be the right pump. But with her only asking what size pool I have and not caring about my pipe size, resistance, equipment, etc etc I am left wondering if that indeed would be the right call. I'm guessing they really don't care. lol I'm also guessing the Dohenys pump isn't quite on par with an Inteliflo Pentair but they are substantially less $$$ also. Any advice you guys can help me with would be awesome and GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you PoolStored and PoolGate! Hopefully I updated my profile a bit. I must have not done that when I signed up. I have learned SO much from this website. It is absolutely amazing. I think the number one thing I learned here is to question everything the local pool store wants to sell me. CYA is at 200......no problem, just add some of our expensive secret sauce and the algae will magically disappear! Ugh. That is in short what led me to this website.
Back to the VS pump question. I know I will save enough (even with the dreaded 1.5 inch piping) by swapping out to a VS pump I just don't know a few things. One, would it be a good idea to put a foot of 2 inch pipe section before the intake? Two, do I need a 3hp VS pump or would the 1.5hp VS be ok? It sounds like I will be ok with the 3hp. I am seriously considering the Dohenys Pool Pro VS 3 hp as it is on sale for $650. Any of the Hayward or Pentairs are well over a grand. But I saw these videos and I am now questioning if 3 hp is too much! These videos are a few years old though so maybe the pool pumps now are ok with my 1.5 pipe???

Depends on the pump. Read the manuals of the pumps you are purchasing, but generically you should have a section of straight run into the pump.

The reason to get the 3hp is they move larger amounts of water. That allows you to run the pump at a lower speed than a 1.5hp, but do so at lower rpm, reducing cost. We recommend running at low speeds (unless you need it for a waterfall or some other need). Because we are running at low speeds, 1.5 or 2" pipes, just doesn't matter.

That makes a ton of sense really! Thank you for that. Finally...something that makes sense. lol I do have a straight (roughly 2 feet of pipe) run in to the intake. I have returns from both sides (the short sides of pool 42 feet apart) that come together at a 3 way valve and then to the intake. I wonder if I could or should increase the pipe size and 3 way valve before the pump intake. As the pump sits below the pool a few feet I would think I am getting a decent volume for the intake.

A lot of the myth and mystery that your are experiencing is because for many years the only thing that existed were single speed pumps, needing to turn over the water Yada Yada Yada.

Post a picture of your pool, and equipment.
