Newbie to pools and SWG

We just opened our new pool (was filled in November, so no salt until now) and am curious about the recommended chemistry in the pool school info here for a SWG. The unit is a Pentair Intelichlor. Pentair has a table of recommended water chemistry in the manual that seems to differ alot in CYA and TA from what's recommended here. CYA they recommend 30-50 vs 70-80 in the pool school, and a TA of 80-120 vs 60-80 recommended here. Why the big difference? Just curious, and confused which to follow?

The ranges we have for those two levels are based on science and experience.
For CYA -- review this. It is a full explanation why a higher CYA is better for a SWCG.
For TA - it is all about pH rise. TA and pH are linked. Typcially we find that once the TA and pH reach equilibrium, whatever that is, they both stabilize unless you have high TA and pH fill water. TA, as long as it is above 50 ppm, has little effect on the pool water.

Pentair uses the pool industry 'standards' for their recommended levels. TFPC has found some of those 'standards' to not be realistic and thus you see our recommendations.

Welcome Craig. I recommend you follow the TFP method. It worked and works for me and you won't be sorry. Could you add a signature to your profile; that way we know what type of pool we're working with. See mine for example. Out of curiosity, if you decide to follow the TFP method, you'll need a suitable test kit for your pool. Get your test kit (TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C). We recommend the TF100 from TFTestKits.net.
