My best friend lives in the Queen City and she's been sending pictures of her outside temperature - yesterday I saw 108 I do not envy you.

You don't need to keep it at SLAM level but you can raise it a little in advance of a high bather load. It's safe for people to swim up to SLAM level so it should be fine. Rain won't cause algae - letting it drop below minimum will. So depending how fast that 12 drops and what your target is, you may have to brave the storms to add more to keep you at your target.

Have you passed all 3 criteria of the SLAM? I would hate to see it return if it drifts down too soon

You are done when:

• CC is 0.5 or lower;
• You pass an OCLT (ie overnight FC loss test shows a loss of 1.0 ppm or less);
• And the water is clear.

Yes - I didn't end my SLAM until I had passed that criteria! My CC was .4 and I had an FC loss of .5ish. The water was clear - and quite a few days later, it is still clear.

When I have people over, that morning I typically bring it up a little above the upper end of the target range but below slam level just to make sure it doesn't make it to min over the course of the day.

Perfect! Even with the intense heat, since my chlorinator is on, I'm still at 12.4 FC (0 CC) so I think I will be fine. Company arrives tomorrow and the pool is still sparkling. I'm so excited and love feeling so in control.

With the chlorinator just make sure to keep an eye on your CYA levels over time (summer) to make sure it's adding enough FC based on the cya. If it starts getting too high you will have to drain again.

Yes, great story!! After your company leaves, try to figure any ways possible to keep debris from entering the pool during downpours. It can be the bane of a pool owners existence. Yes, you will be able to filter it out, but storms come at the worst times sometimes. Spending some coin on avoidance will alleviate untold heartache someday.

Also for the FAS-DPD test you can save some reagents by using a 10ml sample and one heaping scoop of powder instead of 25ml. Each drop is then 0.5ppm instead of 0.2

Yes, thanks for the advice! My plan is to do another drain next week. I got the CYA low enough that I could shock and get it blue and ready for company (who arrive in about three hours!) but I know if I don't get it significantly lower I'm just going to have problems again in the future - and I don't want to have to maintain such a high FC number all summer!
