New tile blocking upper skimmer opening

HI! Just had new waterline tile installed but the new tile overhangs upper portion of the skimmer box by about 1”.

The surface waterline sits about 1/2” +/- above the skimmer hole tile, so there is NO air opening.

Am I missing something? Is this the new way to do things or is an air gap necessary? Should I have the installers come back and trim the tile?

Would you ask them to cut the tile to match the skimmer opening? And maybe seal the tile edge from being too sharp?

I’m pretty sure they’ll need specific direction since they did it this way in the first place, LOL.

The water line needs to be halfway up the skimmer opening. I cant see the full skimmer opening but the tile should be removed/cut so the full skimmer opening is exposed. If you reach in the skimmer with your hand, is the tile just overhanging and not bonded to anything? If theres mortar behind it, then its a bit more difficult that just cutting tile.

Thank you again so much! It feels like there is tile only—no mortar— 1 1/2” hanging down, partially blocking the opening. That same tile is slightly underwater , so no air/water can circulate as it did before. Or at least I can’t peek in there to see it any more. I’ll have them come back out!

On another note, it looks like they didn’t seal the grout—or use the right kind of grout. It is already discolored in places. I hopes it’s not too late. We had it redone just a few months ago.

They were being lazy. They should have cut the tile to match the top of the skimmer. Get them back immediately to do that - you don't have any skimming action at all as it is!
