I am replacing a single speed superpump with the new Hayward VS 700. The automation panel is an old AquaPlus. How exactly do I wire this to make it work with the AquaPlus and control speeds etc?

It depends on the board version, 2.65+.
But it is easy to check:
- Go to the configuration menu
- Unlock menu, hold buttons < > together
- Go to "Filter" sub menu
- Go to "Filter Pump" sub menu
- Toggle through choices

Unfortunately, no. The only way to get an upgraded board, is to replace the main board.
If you had to you could always just use the controls on the back of the VS 700 instead of the board and comm. wire , correct?

Yes, you can use the control on the pump. You could also use the dry contact relays if you have some spares.
