New Sta-rite Mex-e-therm Heater Shutting Down after 3-5 Minutes

Hi, All,

I have a relatively new heater that was installed last October as part of our new build. It has been working fine, but recently started inconsistently shutting off after a few minutes with an E05 error. Water flow seems fine, and if I look at the SFS temp on the console, it slowly rises to the 340--350 range when working, which seems normal from what I've read.

In the instances where it shuts off and throws an error, the SFS temp begins to rise to about 200 and then shows "40" for a minute or so before shutting down. Occasionally, it will show "40" then resume climbing as normal to the 340-350 range and will stay on in those instances. Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions for next steps?

Separately, the heater is still under warranty. Is it standard practice to have to pay hourly rates to the pool builder to service a unit that is still under warranty and was installed less than a year ago as part of a new build? I was surprised that the service department said they were going to send me a quote for hourly rates (which I haven't seen yet). I was expecting (perhaps naively) that this would be covered as part of making sure the build was correct.

Thanks all!

E05 Error with SFS Reading 40

If the SFS reads 80, then flashes to 40, then back to 80, then the 80/40 reading and E05 indicate that the board is not getting a reading from the sensor.

Try reseating the connectors on the SFS.

Otherwise it's a bad sensor or damaged wires.

If the sensor and wiring are good, the board is probably bad.

Disconnect the sensor and check continuity across its terminals.

Resistance should be 3.5-4.0 megaohms.

Exhaust Gas Temperature.

While running, press and hold the On button to display the exhaust temperature (Older Models).

The new models use the Menu to get the SFS.

Here is what the normal exhaust temperature should be:

  • Below 250 degrees...very low
  • 250 to 290 ..................low
  • 290 to 350.................acceptable
  • 350 to 480 ..................high
  • Above 480...................error/shutdown.
Note: HD models can be up to 75 degrees higher. HD models use a cupro nickel exchanger and the efficiency is slightly lower resulting in less heat transfer and more waste heat.

If the exhaust gas temperature is higher then normal then water may be bypassing the heat exchanger through a broken bypass valve.

If you hold down the "pool on" button, it stays on 80, then flashes to 40, then back to 80, then the 80/40 reading and E05 indicate that the board is not getting a reading from the sensor. It's usually a bad sensor or damaged wires.
