I have an uncle that just built a new Quartz Pool.

I had some questions regarding the precautions in maintaining a new pool. And a new pool that was built with quartz.

I had him buy a Taylor 2006 test kit and his pool has been open for 3 months, and the guy who built his pool has been maintaining it thus far. He's been using pucks.

And these were his readings (tested 2 times in different areas of the pool)
CH: 0.5
pH: 8
TA: He ran this test 3 times, and got these results: 210, 150, and 180. I'm going to have him run this test again 2 more times
CH: 225 and 190
CYA: 20-30

He's going to pick up bleach and acid today.
Are the results in the TA vastly different because its a new pool, the same goes with the CH.

What should we avoid doing because it's a new pool? Thanks everyone

A 3 month old pool there are no specific things to avoid. The results look like a typical pool run by a pool service with dump and run weekly visits.

Needs to follow the FC/CYA Levels using 30 ppm CYA. May want to raise that to 40 ppm if he is planning to stop using the pucks.
Lower pH to 7.6.
The TA tests are all over the place no doubt due to a new kit. See the Notes in TA test directions.

CH test variation is again test error. What did his PB say about CH level?

hi mknauss.

I remember a while back... I was trolling through random threads and read something about when pools have just been built they give off chemicals into the pool for a short period of time (1 year).
New pools give off some effect into the water that may effect test results. Or am i dreaming this stuff up?

OR it effects the filter?

CH test variation is again test error. What did his PB say about CH level?

We haven't discussed anything with the pool builder. What should I ask him in regards to the CH test?

A new plaster pool surface will have a rising pH for a year or so.

PB should have checked CH to be sure it was high enough to not pull calcium from the plaster.

Does he have a water softener? Be sure he test the fill water from the spigot he will use to fill the pool.

So his fill water is coming from a water softener.

If he is going to use that water, then he needs to add calcium to get to at least 250 ppm, preferably 300 ppm. He could use Cal Hypo to chlorinate with for awhile to raise the CH.
