Hey guys, below is a picture of my current setup. I am getting ready to make some changes and looking for input/advice. I am planning on removing the booster pump for my cleaner and going with a newer cleaner that operates from an electric outlet..any draw back to this?

I have an old 1hp pump that I want to replace with a variable speed pump. Currently my pump, heater, and salt cell are all controlled by one switch inside of that grey breaker box. The new VS pumps have built in controls and timers. I am concerned that if the new pump switches itself off the heater and salt cell will stay on? Is this a problem? Do I need to rewire the electric? Also I am looking at a 1.5HP superflo...is that too big? Should I go with a 1HP superflow VS instead?
Any and all advice are mucho appreciated!!!

You are correct, VS pumps get directly wired to the breaker...

1. Install a surge protector on the first beaker, 20 amp 240v dual breaker , VS pump do not like any spikes at all and they will fry themselves.. Amazon.com: Intermatic PS3000 Pool and Spa Surge Protective Device: Home Improvement
I have 3 major ones, 1 on my pump breaker box, 1 on my house, and 1 on my AC, I have 15 or 20 in the house..
2. VS pumps come in 1, 1.5, 1.65 and 3hp versions, there are probably more I do not know about.. the bigger they are the lower you can run them and move more water and have less noise.. So the 3hp is the most expensive but can run lower and have less noise.. I have a 1.65 version and love it...
3. set the timer on the pump to run longer than the manual timer for the SWG and heater.. So if you run the pump 8 am to 8 pm set the manual timer 10 am to 6 pm.. both the SWG and Heater have flow sensor so they are "suppose to" shut off but you know how that goes...
4. the new robot cleaners clean your pool for 20 cents on a 2 hour run, can't be beat :)

Thanks Casey - My pool guy told me only get a 1hp because my pool is plumbed with 1.5” pipe and anything more than 1hp will put too much pressure in the lines. Any thoughts on this?
I am looking at buying the 1.5hp assuming I can set it to always run at 1hp or less? I am looking at pentain superflo vs

Martin,

Your pool guy is just flat out wrong.. Kind of like saying you can't drive a 300 HP car through a School Zone, because it has too much HP..

VS pumps are really variable horsepower pumps, you adjust how much HP they have, to whatever task you want them to do..

I have two rent house pools that have 3 HP IntelliFlo pump and 1.5" plumbing.. They have been working perfectly for over 10 years now.

Those that can, do.. Those that can't do, become pool guys...

The Pentair SuperFlo VS will work just fine for you.

Thanks,

Jim R.
