Hello,

I am a first time pool owner, I recently open my pool, after some back and forth I am finally at the point where I can finally start taking care of the water!

So, it is completely filled with new water, I purchased one of those test kits you recommend here but it will only arrive in 2 weeks, so I bought a cheap test from Homedepot, I checked the PH and that seems OK (on the low side) but the chlorine is non-existent which makes sense since I did not add anything yet (haha). Anyway, my question is: Is there a tutorial somewhere on how to "start" a pool? I looked around and could not find it...

Also, as chemicals go, for the moment a bought 18kg of Chlorinating granules and have a few pucks left from the previous owner, I am assuming I will need to buy more stuff at some point but to start that is OK right? also, there seems to be different opinions about the puck, seems like the majority says to put the puck in the skimmer but there is also a lot of people saying no? thoughts?

If I am reading correctly, I can use the granules to get started, it mentions the sock method, I am assuming it means putting it inside a sock in the pool? so I cannot add it directly(spread) in the water? looks like I also need to buy free chlorine, I google it but I am confused, not even one product shows as free chlorine? from the looks free chlorine = liquid chlorine (so no CYA) correct?

On the app, "chlorine gas" = chlor granules? my pool is roughly 30k gallons, app says I need to add about 12oz of chlor gas? sounds correct? that is a lot of socks lol!
 
Sock method is for stabilizer granules. I assumed you meant you had solid chlorine 'shock', likely dichlor. You can spread it on the water directly.

The app shows dichlor.
 
That is calcium hypochlorite. Or Cal Hypo. Adds chlorine and calcium. Be sure to brush the area you spread it in the pool. It can stain your liner.
 
ahhh ok... so is this a good option? I can still return it and get something else then... and this has CYA right? App is saying to add 1lb of this and according to the tutorial I should still add another 2ppm of liquid chlorine on day one, correct?

sorry to be a pain, I am trying to avoid a bad start on this...

I would add 3 ppm FC worth of liquid chlorine. Once you start adding CYA, follow the FC/CYA Levels

ok, just filled my signature!

So, if my math is correct for 3ppm I need to add 2.98L liquid chlorine? and the next day check levels and go from there? what about the 70% Cal hypo? when to use it? I am a little confused now, I thought I had to do both... when you said once you start adding CYA, did you mean the Cal hypo?
 
CYA is stabilizer. Cal Hypo is Calcium Hypochlorite. Two VERY different things.

It takes 96 oz of 10% liquid chlorine to add 3 ppm FC to your pool volume.

It takes about 1 pound of 70% cal hypo to add 3 ppm FC to your pool volume.

Add chlorine now if you can. Tomorrow, get some stabilizer. Add 30 ppm CYA worth of stabilizer using the sock method.
Add 3 ppm FC worth of chlorine each day. Transition to using the FC/CYA Levels chart.

ok, I will buy some CYA tomorrow, I will add the chlorine now.
