A large above ground pool came with our house. It was in terrible shape. It was green and slimy with leaves all over the bottom. Weeks of effort and now the debris is gone, the algae is - maybe - on it's last gasp. I have been trying to do it myself, but my new 20006C Taylor test kit never matches the numbers from the pool store. How can I ever take care of a pool if my test kit isn't accurate? All bottles have expiration dates in 2025.
Right now, I want to get it swimmable so I can decide whether to even keep it. I'm a 72yo singlel mom to 2 grandchildren and so while it would be really great to keep them off of electronics and physically active, it's been a LOT so far to take care of, because I haven't succeeded at even getting a sustainable level of chlorine.
My ideal goal would be to take care of it as cheaply as I can, so I can afford to keep it. I was disspirited this morning when the chlorine was zero again and the water was cloudy, so I went to the pool store. They told me to put in an enzyme, which I did and then after 46 hours, work on sustaining the chlorine. I'm now very familiar with testing for everything, with scrubbing the pool, using the filter basket with and without socks, fixing the gasket on the filter, backwashing, vacuuming the pool, skimming the pool, so I guess I've learned a lot in spite of myself. My current plan is to double shock the pool again after the 48 hours and test the water 4 hours after to see what's happening. But will I trust my tests? Probably not.
I wish I had a different way to test for free chlorine than the FAS-DPD. I'm going through a lot of powder and it's ALWAYS zero until 2 hours later when it turns bright pink. That makes me suspicious of my test kit.
I am a determined woman. I learned in my career to never stop, because people died if I did, so my body just keeps working. I'm used to it. When the pool was scummy, I was up every 2 hours clearing the filters and backwashing,, day and night. But this pool is starting to feel like it might get the tbest of me.
Now I'm off to study up on SLAM, because I'm sure it will be suggested.
Anyway, Hello everyone!
