Hi guys, I am a relatively new pool owner ( wife and I bought a house with one included ). It is a salt pool using a hayward aquatrol board. Anyway this will be our 3rd summer operating the pool.

Year 1 : no problems whatsoever.
Year 2: chlorinator split in the winter because I was never advised it had to come in ( our winters are brutally cold ). Purchased a new one . No problems after that.
Year 3: hooked everything up and the Power light would turn off with the No Flow light staying on. I used this board and found the current limiter to be cracked so bought a new one, bought a soldering iron and managed to fix that. We have power again ! The no flow light is still on however and the pool has been backwashed and filled, there is definately enough of a flow coming back into the pool through the chlorinator. So again I took to the internet and most point to a faulty flow switch, but heres the kicker - the pool has never had one in the setup ! Again, as a non pool owner I didn't even know it existed until I read this. So it worked fine without one for the first 2 years and the previous 3 the other owners had it.

Is there any part on the board that I might need to replace also ( like i did the limiter ) ? The chlorinator was brand new last year and used for only maybe 2months so I doubt that is the problem.

Anyway any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Are you sure there is no flow switch? Can you post a pic of your equipment & chlorinator?

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. So i was in touch with Hayward and the woman on the phone told me that the Aquatrol does indeed not need a flow switch. She had me switch the AL to AL-5 and thought that would fix the issue as it was on AL-0. That didn't work and so she concluded that the board is damaged.

Do any of you guys know which part of the board controls whether the flow light is on or not ? i might try replacing that if possible rather than buying a new board.

It sounds like you have the AQ-TROL-RJ model for above ground pools, since you said there is on flow switch. The AL should be set to AL-7 for this model Aquatrol.

This from the Aquatrol Diagnostics Manual:
Verify correct model # is displayed. AL-6 for HP units, AL-7 for RJ units. Press the diagnostic button 6 times from the default screen to display the model #.

Hope this helps,
E

yes it is the TROL-RJ for above ground pools, that is correct. It is currently on AL-5, as to the instructions from the HP support worker. I tried cycling through to 7 as you suggested but it resets after 5 back to AL-0.

can anyone confirm if these 2 are the same :

HP Rep told me to replace my board: GLX-PCB-TROL-RJ

I found this:
http://www.discounterspoolandspa.com/product.aspx?productid=3191

which is adverstised as :GLX-PCB-RJ-CUL

it looks like the board I have my only concern is the CUL in the name instead of the TROL

Ignore that question, HP have told me it is the same board - just updated name.

So im pretty sure the board is bad, bought a new one and will update how the situation plays out !

The flow switch is just a make/break contactor and has a phone-like plug that plugs into the bottom of the controller, and should only have 2 wires. Since your controller thinks it has "no flow", you could trick it into seeing flow. If you had a spare 2-wire phone line laying around with a male plug, just strip away the wires from a short section & twist them together. Then plug it into the bottom of your controller & see if that works.

Hi guys, an update. I tried to bypass the flow switch using a phone cord to no avail. Given the board doesnt use a flow switch I assume the problem was with the board and not the flow switch jack anyway.

I purchased the new board, switched them and the no flow was gone. I only had a check salt light because it was the start of my pool season and I had not added the salt yet.

So the pool is back up and running, switched the heater on today :)
