New pool, new owner, always having issues...

Ok. If it were my pool I would run a bit hot to make up for any deviation and test results. It won't take much more chlorine to get you up to 16 ppm, or to maintain that level.

Just my 2 cents.
FC 8
CC 0

...added another gallon...

That's a 3.5 loss. No visible signs of algae and nothing left to clean, crystal clear water. Yesterday no one went in the pool because of heavy rain. Frustrating.

What do you mean? I'm just posting the numbers. I have been doing the slam, yesterday I had it up to 12, when I tested at night it had dropped to 11.5. This morning I tested again, posted the numbers, added more chlorine. I've read the SLAM process, am I missing steps somewhere?

Got it. I thought this was an OCLT. Just continue to maintain SLAM levels as many times as you can throughout the day.
It is OCLT, OCLT during SLAM... is that not a thing? How else will I know when the SLAM is done if I'm not doing OCLT and I have no visible signs of algae but I'm still losing FC?

That's it. Apologies that we see too many new people cutting corners and questioned your attention to detail. Carry on. :salut:

Clear water slams are easier in a way with less loss, but more frustrating in another way with no visible progress. If it was going green to cloudy to blue, you'd feel like you were making more progress.

Yes. Continue on. Just woke up and having coffee now. I should have a clearer understanding of things in a few minutes. (y)

I want to jump in but the chlorine level is so high right now, lol... it'll be worth it, eventually.

Gives me time to focus on why we have some coping stones with what looks like rust holes coming through, and why we have literally every coping stone (every 6 inches) dumping I guess calcium/scale to the liner causing a rough vertical line and why the stairs, no matter how much I scrub, have a big calcium/scale mark and like glue residue all over them. I'd love it if everything looked clean.

Up to SLAM is safe for swimmers and equipment.

Tap water with 0 CYA and 1 FC is harsher than slam due to the unbuffered HOCL content and tap water may have 3 or 4 FC.

Swimmer rescue is the only concern and one needs to see bottom well enough should the need arise.

In your case, it's clear so flop in at will. :)

My pavers over a concrete slab are still draining either effervescence or concrete/paver dust onto the vertical face of the top step. It needs frequent cleaning and usually comes off like a sheet of salt.

It's been 2 years and it seems to be slowing down so hopefully it 'runs out' of new gunk one day.

Try rubbing a vitamin C tablet on one of the stains along with water. If it works, crush up vitamin C tablets in a sock and rub them on all of the stains while wet.

Now I know you need more coffee.

...and the hits just keep on coming... clover mites... EVERYWHERE including in the skimmer socks. Since I rarely have my pump off I turned it off this time and realized I have a second hole/false-inlet in the skimmer basket holder that deadends and doesn't go anywhere, full of stuff.

Questions:
How to kill the mites?
What is this false-intake for?

If they don't drown, then you have to wait it out until they move along. Living next to a farm I am overrun with a dozen or more insects. (Mostly beetles)

Old setups used the second hole to bridge to the main drains. Now they run them back to the equipment pad on its own line and leave that hole plugged.

I've ordered some stuff for them to be sprayed so they don't infest the new sod. As for the plugged doodads, it's collecting stuff so does it make sense to fill the hole with like, silicone or something to stop it from collecting debris?

I swish mine clean with a finger when I empty the skimmer baskets. It's got plenty of flow in the area and its usually just clean sand in there.

I might have found another source of algae because one of them had five acorns jammed in it then sand and small rocks The other one was just sand and small rocks.

Meanwhile the skimmer socks are working overtime collecting so much pollen and maybe algae?1000002812.jpg

Welp. The crud traps even finer crud in the filter media, be it a cartridge or skimmer sock. Active blooms will quickly clog normal filters and your DIY version might too. 🤷‍♂️
