The 0.33mm slit size that I measured was with no force, just what would slide in. However, I was able to get larger gauges to go in fairly easily with a slight push because the plastic will flex, especially in the middle. Sand grains slightly larger than the slits can be pushed through by water flow. If water flow is excessive, then it could exacerbate other issues.

This might be a case where multiple issues combined to create the failure.

I think that the sand is probably a bit too small overall. I also suspect that there is too much sand below the 40 mesh size.

If the slits are a bit too big and the water flow is too much, then that would compound the sand size problem.
