Hello all, I have an 18’ round above ground chlorine pool. Vinyl and a cartridge filter. I use either stabilized trichlor tabs or calhypo powder. My CYA went over 100 so I have switched to calhypo powder for the summer. I am pretty confused as the local pool shops all give differing info on how to manage chemicals. My son is immune compromised so a clean safe pool is vital. I’m stressing myself out trying to keep this thing figured out.

Hey there... Welcome! While you wait for some answers to your other post on this topic, I'll give you a few links on how we manage pool care here at TFP.
Pool Care Basics
The best way to manage health issues is with owner testing only, using a GOOD drop based test kit. Then you'll learn to recognize a properly *sanitized* pool. What you have how does not sound like one.

Please read thru our methods and Pool School, our Wiki articles and such.
(Sidenote: in 12 years I've never once had algae, my water is gin-clear and when I do occasional chemo I never fear swimming in *my* pool. Its a TFP pool almost from the start. <and I spend less than $150/year on it and it stays open all year>)

Welcome to TFP!!!

The primary objective of any pool owner should be sanitization (killing bacteria and algae) to keep the pool safe. It is near impossible, with a CYA of 100, to keep enough Free Chlorine to maintain a sanitized pool.

Your first step should be to get a good drop test kit. Here is a comparison of the kits. Link-->Test Kits Compared

When you get your test kit, I would follow these instructions to determine your actual CYA level:

The use of the Trichlor pucks is what drove your CYA to a high level. You were right to modify how you chlorinate. However, Cal-Hypo adds calcium instead of CYA to your pool. It may be that your CH is also high. The only way to reduce CYA and CH is to replace water.

Order a test kit today. While you are waiting, add 5ppm of liquid chlorine to your pool DAILY. Use liquid chlorine! Use Pool Math (link-->PoolMath) to determine how much liquid chlorine to add to add 5ppm per day.

When you get your kit, post a full set of results...FC, CC, TA, CH, CYA and pH. We will get you whipped into shape and keep you and your son safe...

Thank you for this info--so I just bouth the Taylor k-2005- I see you recomend the K-2006c to avoid me having to drop another bunch of money on a new test kit- can you direct me to the needed tests that I could buy and just add them to the K-2005? And do I need any particular type of liquid chlorine? or can I just get some from Walmart?

To turn your Taylor K-2005 into a K-2006, add the K-1515 FAS-DPD test kit.
Or return the K-2005 if able and get a K-2006C or TF-100.

Does your Walmart stock Pool Essentials chlorine this time of year. That is 10% liquid chlorine. Check the date codes before purchasing to be sure it's fresh.
