New pool guy

Hey there. First time pool owner. This is what I inherited. Closed the past 2.5 years. Poorly maintained. But I am determined to make it special for my family and I this summer. Tried calling pool people but right around the time I closed on the house was peak pool season so no luck. I’m on my own and I am definitely going to need youre help.

Have a look at Pool Care Basics and Pool School.

One of the first things you need is a quality test kit: Test Kits Compared I highly recommending getting this on order today. It will be the absolute must tool for getting your water TFP clear! Need to see what your pool water will look like? Here you go: How Clear is TFP Clear?

Get you a big net and start scooping all that junk out of there!

Can you share some more details of what you have? You can take pics of the pump, filters, pipes, etc (aka the "equipment pad") if it helps paint the picture.

I’ve been scooping and shocking the last 5 days, this is what it looks like now.
Pool is 25000 gallons, have a hayward 1.1 hp pump, sand filter. Something a bit odd about this pool is that for being a medium size pool, it only has 1 return jet. Also, although i cant see the bottom im fairly certain theres no main drain. I think it probably had one at one point and they got rid of it because there is another line near my pump that is cut out.

Not super unusual to no longer have a main drain. They can be problematic. Better if it’s gone for you during an algae cleanup.

How are you “shocking”? We recommend the
SLAM Process here.

To get your pool completely algae free per the TFP methods (SLAM), you’re going to need a test kit mentioned above.
