Hey everyone, new to the site and I’ve already learned a lot from old and new posts that this community gives. Thanks!

My story is, So I bought a home with a pool (my first pool) that needed new plaster. I got the plaster done 2 weeks ago, had an acid start up from a 3rd party service company that was contracted by the plaster company. Out of my own uneducatedness, I did not keep tabs on the chem levels for at least a week.

My PH levels were high when I did finally test, and there wasn’t any chlorine. So I added some muriatic acid to Lower the Ph to what it is today, 7.6. I’m finding out that the PH increases quite often so I’ll keep having to add acid. My chlorine was at zero and my water started to get cloudy one day so the pool service tech told me to add liquid chlorine, so I did and water returned to clear. My alkalinity level seems to be okay, at around 90. I’m basically learning it all myself as the plaster company and service company seemed to have done their scope and left me to make sure I’m taking care of my new plaster. So I’m not even sure I’m following right protocols.

Question: do I keep adding chlorine to get to the right level for new plaster? My CYA is low but I’m not sure if I should mess with it during the first month of new plaster? If proper procedures aren’t followed for new plaster, what is the outcome? Does it mean the plaster won’t last as long (what would happen)? I’m just trying to see what the repercussions are if one doesn’t follow by the book guidelines of new plaster.

Also, I have a large tree (I think Oak) above the pool and it seems to be dropping foliage into the pool creating stains (see photo). These stains can be removed by rubbing a chlorine tablet on it and then brushing it, but I don’t want to do that everyday. Is there a method or something that I can do to keep from having these stains show up everyday? The photo happened in less than 24hrs so I’m just worried my whole floor one day with be stained and it’ll be a nightmare to remove them. Any recommendations? I do brush everyday and vacuum every other day. I’m kind of freaking out over how to take care of this new plaster since it cost an arm and a leg, I just don’t want to ruin it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Follow the most appropriate start-up guide for another 2 weeks. If not sure then follow the NPC guide.

What test kit are you using?

Test daily and keep your FC around 3 ppm.

Welcome to TFP.

You should have around 30 ppm of CYA.

What is your CYA value?

Plaster tends to survive a lot of abuse. Do the best you can and don't worry about it.

Use a leaf net on a pool pole and get the leaves out of the pool daily.

You will find there are a few weeks in the spring and fall when trees make a big mess.

Thanks for the help!

To answer your questions:
My CYA is at 10
Test kits: Taylor k2006 and Poolmaster 22260 5-way. I tend to use the pool master more.

How would I keep the tree droppings from staining if they’re falling overnight? I guess schedule my Polaris to run at some point in the night and some during the day?

I suggest you rely on the Taylor K-2006 test kit.

All you can do is try and get the leaves out fo the pool ASAP. They will not cause permanent stains. Once you are past your 30 day startup period you can run higher chlorine levels that should get rid of the leaf stains better.
