Hello!
We purchased a house with a 25k salt water pool system about a year ago. I think our pump is going out... are there any indicators I should look for?

also, after reading about algae control on this page, I noticed liquid chlorine at walmart for a fraction of the price than the powder at leslies... is still ok to use? Is there a certain % of chlorine I should look for? I was told the stuff at walmart in the packs are not of a high % of chlorine and you need more to do the job. What do you typically use?

Back to my pump question, what is the average life span of a pump and what is the average costs to replace a pump for a 25k gallon pool? I see stuff on Leslies from a few hundred all the way to a few thousand. any recommendations or sites to buy from if we do need to replace soon?

thank you!!

You mention that you have a salt water pool, but then you talk about powders from a pool $tore. If your SWG is working correctly, you have no need for such things.

Usually, if a pump is going bad it makes a lot of noise. I know when I had to replace the bearings in mine it got to where you couldn't talk to somebody if you were near it.

Thank you for the welcomes! Well we've been having algae problems give or take since about September. The entire system is about 10 years old so I'm wondering if it's just getting to be that time? I feel so dumb- I spent 140 bucks last week only to have the same issue appear again. My swg was saying to Check cell but I was told the salt levels were fine yesterday but my baking soda levels were low. Hubby tried to vacuum it out today so we could get levels at where they need to be and nothing was picked up so now we appear to have air in the lines and the jets aren't moving water... he's currently outside trying to figure out the problem. I will send photos tomorrow of our setup.

Yvonne,

I would suspect that your filter is full, causing the lack of water retuning to your pool.

What is the pressure gage on top of the filter read?

When was the last time you cleaned your filter?

Is this why you believe that your pump is bad?

Just getting up this morning, let me go take photos. My husbands friend is a chemist engineer or something or another and he works with water plants- he checked our sand filter this summer when he came to visit and he said it was fine, it still had life in it. I'm a worry wart! So I just assume maybe it has something to do with the pump being so old. I'll post photos in just a few minutes.

Hi Yvonne
Sad to hear your pool turned green and is now cloudy, however you have started a slam, which is the only way to clear the pool reliably. If you follow the instructions it works every time

Good work on finding the unseated O ring :goodjob:

I wouldnt worry about your SWG until you have finished the slam. A swg only maintains chlorine levels and cannot produce enough chlorine to combat an algae bloom. I suggest turning it off for now and just using bleach/liquid chlorine. Adjust your slam/shock level to the non swg level in the chart for now

A swg also has a temperature range that it works within and it may be getting too cold for it to produce chlorine or it may need cleaning or maybe it has been trying to fight algae for a long time. I dont know as I dont have a swg, but I am sure someone will advise. But for now just finish the slam and we can sort that out later

Can you please post a full list of test results and pool temp so we can advise further:testkit:

What are you using to test the water? I hope you have a fas-dpd FC test as found in the taylor k2006 or the TF 100, its the only way to test the high FC levels

To make things go faster, test and dose to your slam level every couple of hours if possible or at least 3x a day (before work, after work and before bed). You can also try adding pool DE to your sand filter to help in the final stages of clearing

Are you using poolmath at the top of the page to calculate what you need to bump your FC using the slam level from this chart?

Dont worry, we can teach you to clear your pool and soon you will feel like you are :swim: through life and not :drown:

Thank you! I turned the swg off on Saturday. It's looking better each day. I took water to Leslie's to test and this is what it came bk as on sat:
fc: 0 (which I don't get bc I've been adding liquid chlorine and the pool is no longer green)
Tac- 0
salt- 3200
calcium hardness- 200
cya- 60
total alkalinity- 90
ph- 7.8
copper-0
iron-0
Phosphates 100.

And no test- I need to get one I've just been super busy- I have a newborn on top of this mayhem with the pool I've made time to brush once a day and keep the pump running and I have plenty of chlorine on hand I bought. It's 10% is what the label said and the. Idea I saw that that was a good percentage.

Yvonne,

Sorry for your troubles, but you cannot SLAM a pool without a good test kit. Also, you cannot add chlorine and wait until the next day to run tests. You have to have the ability to test and keep the chlorine above your SLAM level of 24 for your CYA level of 60. You can't let your FC ever drop below 24 for a number of days until you can pass the SLAM criteria.

Hi yvonne
the concern with using a pool store is they may only be able to test up to 10FC. If you have overdosed your pool with chlorine it may have bleached the test therefore showing 0. Too high an FC and you risk bleaching your pool surface

Or you may not be testing often enough and the chlorine may be used up after a couple of hours and the algae gain hold and multiply rapidly. This would undo all of your good work and drag out your slam, costing you time and money

Jump online and order a Taylor K2006C (amazon) or a TF 100 (tftestkits.net) as soon as you can.

The reason you need one of those kits is because you need to test (we think, it relies on your CYA) upto 24ppm FC. The fas-dpd test in these kits will test as high as 50ppm. You also need a CYA test which these have. btw the tests are easy as counting drops in most cases and we can show you the videos for the tests or explain how to use. Those test kits will last you for at least one season and you can buy refills too :)

Not sure if we can make suggestions on the amount of chlorine you should be using without your own CYA test as thats the one the pool store often gets wrong :(

Glad to here the pool is looking better though

Thanks all. Question about the tests, on the tftestkits.net site there are two tests, Taylor K-2006 and the TF-100 and on amazon they have Taylor K2006c that was noted; what is the difference between the 3 and having a salt pool, is one better used over the other? I'd like to purchase one today. Thanks!!

The TF-100 gives you more of the reagents you will use more of. I highly recommend it. Along with a Speedstir (no-brainer) and salt test kit K-1766. I also went with the XL option - your call. Refills are always available but this kit is sized better to begin with.

Hey! Congrats on the new pool! We recommend test kits that include the FAS-DPD test to measure high levels of FC (Free Chlorine). You need to know higher levels of FC if you ever need to SLAM (Shock, Level, And Maintain) your pool. TFTestkits ships every business day if ordered by 2 pm (remember tomorrow is Veteran's Day). Here are the kits compared: Pool School - Test Kits Compared Please call me at 919-528-1454 if you have any questions. Rebecca
