New Homeowner - CLEAN POOL [back to shocking.]

Re: New Homeowner - Green Pool [shock process: day 5]

Alright guys. I really need some help with how to perform this stupid drop test. I am getting WILDLY inaccurate results depending on when I stop my drop count for fc and start my drop count for cc.

I just did two tests on water pulled from the pool at the same time. The first time I ended up with

fc: 8
cc: 3

the second time i ended up with

fc: 3
cc: 8

For test 1, I dropped drops until the sample was clear, set down the tube to add the 5 drops of the next reagent, and before I could start adding the 5 drops, the sample was pink again, so I repeated the process until I was able to keep the sample clean until I could get the 5 drops in and then did the cc test.

For test 2, I stopped adding drops to the sample when it was clear and REALLY QUICKLY put 5 drops of the next reagent in and did the cc test.

I have NO idea what the proper method of doing this test is, or at which point I should stop adding drops while testing cc - or how long the sample needs to stay CLEAR without returning to pink.

I'm never going to be able to stay on top of this if I can't test properly...

Re: New Homeowner - Green Pool [shock process: day 5]

Pool calc wanted 57 oz to go from 11.5 to 14 in my size pool. I added 2 quarts (64oz) to overshoot and took my anger at my inability to do the stupid tests right out on the brush/liner while brushing. Timer has been set for 1 hour, will test again at that point and chlorinate again. Thankfully the sun is down so any change in numbers is either stupidity on the testers part or algae destruction.

I should note that I still have a bit of a "slick" on the surface of the pool and white foam in places even though I can very likely call heads or tails on a quarter in the bottom of the deep end. No one has been in the pool for 6 or 7 days, except for the leaves and buggies that I skim out several times a day.

Re: New Homeowner - Green Pool [shock process: day 5]

fc: 10 (20 drops, clear solution while swirling for 8 seconds give or take before adding 5 drops of next reagent)
cc: 1.5

going to add another gallon of 12.5% to get me up to fc15.

Re: New Homeowner - Green Pool [shock process: day 5]

fc: 8
cc: 4

This is ridiculous. I added enough chlorine to get up to an fc 15.5 - and an hour later I'm down from approximately 15 fc to 8 fc and 4 cc? What is going on here?

I'm going to add another gallon and a quart of 12.5% and test again in an hour.

Re: New Homeowner - Green Pool [shock process: day 5]

I just tested the same sample again from the last test and I get results of

fc: 11
tc: 1

At least my tc is the same, but seriously, can I really be having THIS much trouble with this test? I thought it was supposed to be pretty idiot proof? I added another 160 oz of 12.5% after the last test, so hopefully the test an hour from now will not be so low.

Whatever. I ordered more reagents and a speed stir cause I'm getting really low on the powder. Hopefully I'll have enough to get me through until it gets here. I'm very, very tempted to give up on this till next year since there are only a few more weeks of swim weather out here.

Re: New Homeowner - Green Pool [shock process: day 5]

Do NOT give up. It took me awhile to get the hang of the drop test too. Now I can almost predict what it will be based on what I see in my pool. When the temps are triple digits I have to add about a half gallon of 10% chlorine to my pool every day. So that's about 2 bucks a day. Sometimes I have to shock and use two galloons, but really it is still way cheaper than what I ever paid when going to a pool store. I haven't read your entire thread, but how long do you run your filter each day? When I first switched from Bacquacil to BBB I used a ton of bleach and had to run my filter 12-24 hours/day. Now that I have it under control I can usually run it about 4-6 hours/day. I finally learned that more bleach was always better when it is hot. The sun eats the stuff up and I have a really high CYA, like 90-100 so I have to use more bleach just to keep free chlorine levels correct.
Good Luck and keep trying!!! :-D

Re: New Homeowner - Green Pool [shock process: day 5]

fc: 11.5
cc: 1

need 80oz of 12.5%. I used a quart from one of my gallons earlier, so to make things easier on me I'm going to add what's left of that guy, or about 96oz. I'm seriously amazed that I'm using THIS much chlorine in nearly pitch black dark.

I'm beginning to wonder if my 12.5% is degraded perhaps, or my volume calculations are way off...

To answer horsegal, pump runs 24/7, has been for 3 weeks. I'm not concerned about the cost, just that it's taking so long and there's only so much time left before it gets too cold by a large margin to swim.

Re: New Homeowner - Green Pool [shock process: day 5]

fc: 14.5
cc: .5

Again I'm supposed to add 11oz, so i'll put in 32 to get me to about 16fc, then i have to sleep. If I wake up to 15 or more fc and .5 or less cc, I'll consider that a successful pass of the OCLT and start working on the rest of my numbers.

Re: New Homeowner - Green Pool [shock day 6: failed oclt #1]

I am going to pick up the following from my locally based (thankfully!) online pool store with great prices.

Taylor FAS-DPD Titrating Reagent R-0871-C-12 - 2 oz
Nava Pool Stabilizer & Conditioner - 8 lb Bucket (this is 100% cyanuric acid)
Taylor DPD Powder 1/4 lb. - R-0870-J

I already ordered R0871 and DPD Powder from tftestkits, but I estimate that it's not going to be here until early next week, and only have about 2 tests worth of DPD powder left from my original kit. Oi. Anyhow, I wanted to make sure that the reagent R-0871-C-12 is the same as the R-0871 that came with my tf-100. Can anyone comment on that?

-12 means 12 pack - 24oz total.

Re: New Homeowner - Green Pool [new question on last page]

Also figured I should post a picture of my progress, especially since after last nights superextrahyperchlorination I can finally take a picture that actually shows the pool drain in the deep end. The nice diffuse light from the overcast sky helps a bit with the glare too.

just read the request to host images elsewhere, so did that and embedding my drain picture this way instead.

HOLY CARP (yes, carp) that's a lot of reagent. Was really cheap though, I just hope it's not expired, but I have to do something to hold me over until the refills for my tf-100 get here.

Thanks for the Taylor parts list link too, that'll be super helpful in the future I can imagine.

YES, THE FILM! I'm going to hold off on dealing with that for now. Going to keep going with the shock process since I'm still reading > .5 cc. I'm going to raise my CYA to 30 or so now that I'm mostly in the clear (pun intended), and keep going until I can pass the OCLT. Once that happens if I still have the film I'll start looking at defoamers or the like - but of course won't put anything in the pool without getting at least a cursory okay from my TFP support system.

I am wondering it the previous owner dumped in a ton of algaecide in hopes of keeping the pool clear at the end of their tenure. My guess (as is yours) is as you finish the shock process, you film/foam will also be gone. Keep up the good work!

My guess is that they stuck the 12 pack code on the individual bottles on the website by accident.
