Hi all. We had our pool built in 2014 took care of it for the first 2 years. Hired a service last year and fired them last month. I am determined to take care of it on my own. The local pool service supply is a national chain and rip off, I refuse to go in there. Pool is chlorine about 32,000 gallons and has a Hayward pump. Thats about all I know right now. We currently are only using the tabs for our chlorine and I am in the process of adding acid to lower the PH. I do have a test kit (Taylor 2000 I believe?) but I have to admit I am a little intimadated by it . I pretty much use the test strips but am beginning to think they are liars as everything tested is off the charts. My pool is sparkeling and looks great so how can the tests right? I am not looking for answers just yet and I will post my questions in the appropriate forums. I am new to taking care of it myself and look forward to what your site has to offer!!

Welcome!

The right test kit makes all the difference. Do your own testing, learn how to interpret the results, and only go to the pool store for obscure pieces of hardware or if they have a sale on pool toys.

If you have a Taylor K-2006, great! If you have a K-2005, it's close, and all you need is to buy the FAS-DPD test and you'll have the equivalent of a K-2006. There are other less-complete kits made by Taylor, which are just as accurate as they contain the same chemicals, but as I said, they're incomplete.

Anyway, your pool is about twice the size of mine, so I'll go out on a limb here and say you'll be able to maintain your pool for about $2.00/day. Maybe $2.25, to account for inflation and the more intense sun where you live. Less in the winter.

Spend some time reading. Start with ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry and be sure to read How to Chlorinate and Test Kits Compared. It's almost June... get on board now and you'll be a pro long before July. Go ahead and schedule a huge party and send out the invitations. You'll want to impress everyone with your sparkling pool.

Thanks everyone. Ok I’m throwing the test strip out lol. I’ve been reading a lot and really like the pool math. All good stuff. So I did tests with my K2005 kit. I’ve ordered the FAS-DpD test kit. Couple of questions- my pool is pebble sheen. Is that plaster? Been reading on chlorine to use. Is household bleach better than liquid pool chlorine? I thought we had a guy a while back that said even liquid pool chlorine had stabilizers in it. My CYA has always been high so I want to get rid of the tabs completely.

PH 7.2
FC 7.5
TC 5
CC 2.5
CYA 100 +
TA 2250 my math could be wrong?
CH 1000 again math issue?

Good job on ditching the strips!

Pebble Sheen is plaster.

Liquid chlorine / bleach /Liquid Shock / Chlorinating Liquid is all the same, just different concentrations. Just be sure it is plain, no scents, no Cloromax, no splashless, etc.

Your TA and CH are not correct on your list of tests. Re-read your directions to be sure you are using the right multipliers.

With your CYA that high you really should drain some water. Run the test again using Step 8 here Pool School - CYA

Good luck

Just saw your location. Your CH could be 1000 ppm. Mine gets to about there and I drain.
