New Filter Time Questions, From DE to Cartridge

I currently have a Hayward Perflex EC65 DE filter that has failed and I'm planning to switch to a cartridge filter cuz I don't want to deal with DE anymore.

The perflex filter is small, and my pool is only about 17k gallons so I dont think I need a large filter, but I'm curious if a quad cartridge style filter would still be beneficial as far as wear and tear on the cartridges go.

Also, I drain water from my pool using the drain on the back of the Perflex filter and a backwash hose, and it doesnt look like I could do that with the cartridge filters' drains from the pics I've seen. Would a drain port have to be added to the plumbing? And would it be better for that to be before or after the filter? My current plumbing is very simple, main drain and skimmer into a ball valve, into the pump, then 1 return line from the filter back out to the pool return jets.

Thanks for any advice.

Scott,

I have a 17K pool and it has a Pentair CCP-520 Quad cartridge filter. My theory is that you can't go too big when talking about filters.

I clean it twice a year as my pool never closes. In your location, once a year should be plenty.

Since cartridge filters do not have a backwash, or MPV, you can't shut if off when you open the pump lid. This means it is best to put a Jandy valve between the pump and the filter input. If you simple use a 3-way Jandy valve, you can also use this valve to send water to a drain. Simple to do and much better than using your filter's drain.

Thanks,

Jim R.
