New F/Glass build DownUnder - Adelaide - What have I let myself in for?... :)

Here is another site I stumbled on which seems to have a good range of products. Your Online Pool Shop for all Pool Equipment & Spare Parts : Direct to the Public

Waste plumbing run is now 99% there. I have run from my house's waste connection gully to my pool equip. plant room. Just need to have my friend finish off a small amount of tiling before I can run the internal run to my filter's waste outlet.

A quick snap of the waste plumbing section which had to drop approx 500mm below the surface for a short section as my pool fence (glass) concrete foundation will need to be around 450mm deep at that location.

I performed a test this afternoon (around 14:30 Hrs) using my new Clear Choice Labs test kit - Results as follows:

CYA None added to pool as yet (probably add a small amount tomorrow to get this underway)
PH - Around 7.4/7.5
FC - 7.5 ppm
CC - 0.5 ppm or less
TA - 90 ppm
CH - 90 ppm
Salt 4000 ppm

FC is a tad high but that is simply because I have been running the SWG for around 12 hrs @ (75% output). Being a new pool without any CYA and without a proper test kit I wanted to err on the high side of FC rather than being too low.

Calcium hardness level is low so I need to increase this...!

I have no idea how you managed that by hand.

The ground was actually not too hard after a bit of rain...!

How are you finding the test kit?

Kit is fairly easy to use due to the great instructions - The PH test I found a bit difficult due to the colour shades blending in with each adjacent colour to my eyes - I think I was concentrating too much and my eyes were looking for shades that were not there - A bit like the CYA test if you stare too long at it.

I also had a PH probe added to my chlorinator which I will use for monitoring.

I simply calibrated that this afternoon with the PH standard that comes with the kit. It says the pool water is around 7.4 so probably close enough to in the middle of the range.

pH test tip-I have a white, plastic plate I hold up behind the testing tube. I do the test under my oven hood as it is very bright. I hold the tube up with the plate behind it. I pull the plate back and forth until I get a color match. For this test sometimes the color match will be between two numbers.

What make & model?

So now I need an oven hood the same as Kim for PH testing...:D

I did use a bit of white paper but was trying to use a bright Makita LED torch which has a hint of blue in the emitted spectrum which did not work well with the colour strip on the bottle.

I may try an incandescent torch next time which has a more yellowish cast. Or even try our range hood which has fairly bright halogen lamps....

LOL I have a 60watt bulb it in if that helps. It is an incandescent light. I think with it being over (instead of beside or behind) the tube, so low, and so bright is what all works together to help me with this test. I also think the plate being plastic might have something to do with it as it is "shiny".

Another round of tests today.

I took the sample of water at around 17:00 hrs as I wanted to see how my FC & SWCG was holding up through the day since I turned it down two notches yesterday.

There was some sun out today although it turned cloudy/overcast around 15:00hrs.

Still no CYA in my pool as yet but I started to add (2Kg to start with) Calcium Chloride to start increasing my CH levels as they are fairly low.

Around midday I poured it in after diluting in a bucket first - pump on high speed for around an hour before winding it back to medium (1800 RPM). Also brushed sides and waterline to aid in mixing.

It was interesting to note that the reaction in water is exothermic as my gloved hand was quite warm after diluting the Calcium Chloride granules in the bucket.

Critical Levels
FC - 4.5
CC = 0
PH approx 7.5/7.6
TA - 60 (Was up at 90 yesterday)
CH - 125 (starting to rise) I will take it slowly with the Calcium Chloride so as to not overshoot etc.

My FC has dropped since yesterday (UV) but good to see that my SWCG is easily keeping up with daily demand considering no CYA in the pool as yet.

Would be a good idea to get the CYA in there. You'd be amazed how harsh that level of FC is with no CYA. No big deal with no swimming I guess, but I'd still want 50 ppm CYA with 4 or 5 FC. Easier on equipment too I think.

Good thing about CYA is you know you're starting from zero. So whatever you add is correct and doesn't need to be tested :)

Sock in skimmer with pump running is easiest. Sock hanging from pole in front of return (not touching side of pool) is second easiest. Backwash before adding CYA so you know you can leave the filter alone for a week after adding the CYA.

It doesn't dissolve well, so it becomes a slurry in a bucket, which isn't the recommended way for TFPC.

I was just reading some old threads on the topic of adding CYA - Sock in skimmer or in front of return seems like the go....!

Thanks...!
