Recent reader - first post.. thank you in advance for your help!

We have a 10,000 gallon pool (in ground) with the following equipment:
- Hayward Micro Clear DE filter (existing when we purchased house about 7 years ago)
- Hayward 1hp single speed filter pump (also existing when we purchased house about 7 years ago)
- Pentair Intellichlor Salt Chlorine Generator (we installed 6 years ago)
- Pentair Mastertemp 400 propane heater (we installed 6 years ago)

At some point in the past few days, the pool pump appears to have failed. We checked the breaker (fine), and the outlet the pump uses is fine.

We are leaning towards replacing the filter pump with a variable speed (vs just sourcing a new 1hp single speed pump). We had been planning to replace the DE filter at the start of next season (the band clamp is failing and the filter occasionally shows signs of leaking from where the clamp tightens). We may just replace it now since we are going to be putting in a new filter.

My question for the group - any recommendations on a solid variable speed pump? I believe the plumbing between the equipment is 1.5" PVC. What HP should we be looking for in the pump?

Re: automation - I'd like to be able to access the pump via wifi (as you can see from our current setup, the current pump is controlled by an old school Intermatic mechanical timer switch). If possible, it would be great to be able to get the pool heater into the automation mix as well.

Thanks again for any insights and suggestions!

Waterway Defender 3hp, Pentair Intelliflo 3hp VSP (without SVRS), Hayward VS 950, Calimar 3hp VSP are all good options.

If you are going to get automation, you want the same brand pump. Might be best to choose the automation, even if you don't purchase it yet, before choosing a pump. Since you already have a pentair cell and heater, might look at the pentair options for automation, and the intelliflo for the pump....

Look at Pentair IntellConnect. It's a good value and provides full control over a Pentair pumps and SWGs. The only thing it does not offer is control of valve actuators.

Thank you @PoolStored and @Rancho Cost-a-Lotta!

I am on the same page with leaning towards the Pentair products because the SWG and heater equipment we have is Pentair (and is what my pool guy prefers to install). I am waiting for his call to discuss. I'll let you know what direction we go. The IntellConnect does look like the right approach for my simple setup.

Thank you!

An update:

We had a Pentair Intelliflo 3hp VSP installed today. The pool has been sitting without a filter for at least 4 days (maybe more - I am not sure how many days the old pump motor failed before I noticed). On Sunday I used some liquid shock and a few hours later algeacide, and used the ool vacuum (Polaris robot) and a cover pump to keep water moving continuously for the past few days.

Now that things are moving through the system, I am seeing the pool begin to green up. I just poured a bit more liquid shock into the water - hopefully the water begins to clear up. Before pump failure, things have been mostly stable.

Once the rain lets up I'll head out to hit things with the brush and see if we clear up overnight.
