New build - Prosper, TX

I can't find the thread (of course ) but there was a build a couple of summers ago where they did just that. They wanted their steps to be "outside" the swim lane and towards the house. They cut that part of the existing patio out. It came out great! I will keep looking to see if I can find the thread!

Thanks! Now I'm on the hunt to find it! I talked to our designer again today and he said saw cutting concete isn't a big deal, they do it all the time. He didn't bring it up because he didn't think we wanted to since we paid so much for our patio... Which is a good point but I'd rather cut away a few feet of concrete and have a bigger pool. The thing I keep seeing on TFP is that everyone wishes they went bigger and no one wishes they went smaller

Here are a few shots from our cuts. I think it's a great option. It looks clean, and it was super easy from what I could see. I would imagine with coping up next to it you wouldn't even know.

Wow that does look clean. That was my concern... Making it look natural. After seeing this, I think things will blend and look good... plus our coping is oklahoma flagstone so we have a little bit of a margin for error because its naturally imperfect.

Update.... We did our on-site meeting today and it looks like we will be cutting into concrete..... we're just not sure how much yet. The designer is going to get us some renderings and quotes back later today. We have a few options depending on if we want to remove our current pergola, I'm not attached to it and built it myself a few years ago so its not a huge deal. Another concern..... our current patio is slightly sloped for drainage so there are concerns about having to get creative between coping and existing patio with some sort of a paver or concrete to bring the 2 levels together (off by an inch or 2 depending on where you are)

I'll post the renderings when I get them back because I'm really torn on where to go.....

Here's our current patio so you can get an idea of what were working with.... pool would be in the grass area to the right

We did a really cool drain in ours. Basically a drain pipe was laid below the concrete under where an expansion joint will go. The concrete was then saw cut on the joint, deeply into the pipe. It's basically an invisible drain :)

You may be able to do something similar where they meet.

Thats a good idea.... we actually have a different problem though. Our patio is on a slight slope and the pool coping with have to be completely straight.

It's not ideal so I'm thinking that we're going to limit how far into the patio we go.

What a pretty deck and pergola! You have skills!

Thank You! The pergola actually wasn't too bad! I built it with some "DIY pergola in a weekend" plans I found a few years back....

As for the patio.... We love our patio and at the time we had it put in, we had no intention of getting a pool..... but now here we are wishing we put in a pool first and then did the patio around it.

Gotcha!

Could you use the coping to have an angle that meets the patio as it drops? It wouldn't be the same angle the whole way. However, if you did a similar type of drain that I described, you may be able to handle the shifting angles and still pull away water with no issues. **I'm assume we are talking an inch or so of slope, vs. 4-6 inches which would render my thought useless :)

At first is didn't look too bad. He did measurements and in one spot its going to be 3-4" difference. He sent me a sketch of what it would look like at they wanted about a foot for every inch. We are going to end up saw cutting but only a small portion of the edge to basically keep the current shape but get a few extra feet of pool.

A few extra feet of pool is great! Good luck!

Below is what we're going to end up doing. We sketched out a million different options... including taking down the pergola and moving pool into there..... leaving pergola up and then adding tanning ledge between the pergola and the house. The issue with anything that went too far into the patio ended being that difference in slope. You can actually kind of see it if you look back at one of my patio pictures and compare the patio with the retaining wall behind it.

The green line is the cut line. It gains about 18-24", which isn't a ton but the saw cutting didn't end up being that expensive and we'll take all the inches we can get.

Side note: my patio looks not straight in this picture..... it looks straight from the ground though.... so I'm not sure if its the angle of the shot, or skewing during flight, or if they literally poured it at a slight angle

Thanks for all the input, especially ryan-california.... your pics helped calm my wife when I explained that we would be saw cutting into our patio.

In the previous post, I mentioned that we were debating on where and how to cut.... so we officially mapped everything out and here's what we came up with... its very similar to the last one but this one has a bit more detail. Most people have their design worked out by now but I had so many what if's that I kept going back and forth.... this is the first time that I looked at the drawing and said "this is the final one"

Below is a drawing I did. I shot it from my drone. Everything is to scale... I measured and marked everything so I could later draw on the picture.

  • Green line is the cut line
  • Red is the coping
  • Orange - raised wall
  • Light blue is water
  • Thick dark blue - deck jets
  • Thin dark blue - sheer descent

sigh..... it wasn't until I looked at this shot that I realized I never stained half of the top of my pergola... and one of the pieces of wood is warped.

Drawing I made when finalizing

I think you nailed it! I like it all.

Got a good laugh at the drone shot showing stuff you don't see from the ground  No biggie LOL

Now please go take all of the shovels and that board away from that window before one of them jumps up and breaks the glass
