Finally finished reading your thread and decided to get a quote from Grand Isle. We're also looking to build a pool and are in the process of receiving quotes at the moment.

Small world....we lived in Copper Lakes for almost 6 years since moving up the street North of 290.

So Google Maps have updated their satellite shots (but not Google earth yet which is a little odd).
This is from around Halloween so the pool was about a month old and the grass hadn't quite fully recovered yet.

Spring-Break is just around the corner. You can test your heater :-D
..we'll have to compare energy costs. If I remember correctly (70% chance of that)-with an avg of about 28F Delta, last Spring-Break my monthly gas bill was about $100 extra for about 6-days of heating.

I have heated it... My gas bill in December was $250 (normally $30-50) so basically $200 to heat the pool one weekend...! (delta of about 45-50F...!) I wouldn't normally have bothered given how much I needed to heat it, but I wanted to go in and have a look at something and even I wasn't going in 45 degree water!

In October, I heated it maybe 15 times, and my gas bill was under $300 with an average delta of about 15 degrees. There was also a LOT of firepit usage as well during that time. My Mum was over from the UK and I'd taken vacation so we spent a lot of time in the pool - it was great.

So I reckon I'll probably heat it at Easter then maybe in May and then prolong the season in October but the rest of winter, not so much. In December it took 2 full days to come up to temp (ambient air was in the 40's and 50's IIRC)

Note to self: next time it's going to get cold, put plankets on Pygmy palms before it starts getting really cold, windy & wet!
Took me 1.5 hours to cover 3 palms (well 3 trunks of a Pygmy)!!
And what kind of idiot puts a large Pygmy in a planter next to the water that's really hard to get a ladder next to... Oh wait, that'd be me! :mrgreen:

Wow, you have definitely put them to good use! When we built our pool, I made a pact with the wife that we use the hot-tub at least weekly. So far, we've averaged about 3 times/month. The fireplace gets more use; about a cord of wood/year.

We're managing probably twice a week or more on the hot tub. We have a 2 yr old boy and he loves being in there - it's a perfect size for him, he can jump into the middle of it quite safely and generally has a ball.

Thanks. The color choice was tough though we are both very very happy with how it turned out. It's very difficult picking colors from little samples or even pictures. We visited pools that had the two colors we thought we were interested in and that turned out to be very valuable.
 
I appreciate the detailed information you posted on here. I've been lurking as we approach a new pool build in Georgia. A couple of ?'s -1) looking at the Wet Edge Chilean Tahoe. Are you pleased with the final color? 2) Did you use a different color (sand color) on your tanning ledge? If so, can you provide that color? I've asked our PB to make our sand color.

Your pool is amazing, and I have been using its' design to help me with mine.

Love the final color of the Chilean Beach Tahoe - it's exactly what we were hoping it would be. We don't have a different color for the tanning ledge (there's flagstone on the beached entry), it's all the same color.

The wife and I were talking last week and the only thing we'd change about the finish is that for the hot tub we think we would have liked to have had them put in Primera stone in the same color so that the hot tub was smooth. It's not rough with the pebbles in there but you can feel them (love the feel in the pool) and for us I think we would have really liked the smooth finish in the hot tub. It would have been more money though and it's something we may try and look into doing in a couple of years time.

Appreciate the feedback on the Wet-Edge finish. I was beginning to worry about the feel of the pebble being too rough. The pebble finishes have not caught on here yet like they have in Texas.

Re: tanning ledge color, I realized yesterday after watching the Wet-Edge videos that the color differentiation on your pool's tanning ledge (and others) is due to water depth. I'm learning :)

No problem. Like I said, in the pool I really like the feel of the pebble. It's not at all slippery or rough and just feels pretty good to be honest. It's only really in the hot tub that we think we'd have preferred the smoother finish of the Primera stone.

And yes - the water color looks different at the tanning shelf. It's actually why we struggled with the color so much - they look different in different pools and it's hard to tell exactly how your pool is going to look until it's in. My wife was unsure on the Tahoe and actually wanted the lighter Caribbean version. She preferred the look of the Tahoe in the shallower water and in the hot tub (we went to see a pool with Tahoe as well as one with Caribbean) but was worried the Tahoe would be too dark for her in the deep end. It turned out just right for us.

If there's anything else you want to know, just ask. Happy to pass on some of what I learned along the way since I learned a ton on here in the first place!
 
So nearly three years later and I guess like a lot of people with gunite slides, it's no longer as slick as it used to be.



I did a bunch of research on refinishing it myself but although I saw the question as to what to use to seal it asked a lot I couldn't find conclusive answers or examples of people actually doing it.

In the end, I've gone back to the subcontractor who first did it and they're coming back out tomorrow to refinish and seal it. Hopefully, I'll see what they use and ask them about it for future reference!

Other than that, still loving the pool!
