I am going to have a new AGP 16x32 oval pool installed on the 16th. In the package it comes with a 1.5hp pump w/300lb sand filter . I have read about the 2 speed pumps with timers really saving on energy costs. I can upgrade to that although the pool installer thinks it may not be necessary. Any advice?

The 300# sand filter sounds good. I'd recommend upgrading to the 2-speed pump if at all possible. It's a whole lot better to do it now than to wish you'd have done it after the deal is done.
Also, should you decide to go with the single speed, a 1hp pump would be more than sufficient and will help you save on energy costs.
