New 12x24 pool and Taylor K-2006 test kit.

So I have the Intex 12 x 24 x 52 pool set up and filled, Jacksonville Florida has been riddled with rain for the last month. My first issue is the powder in the K-2006 test kit, the powder is harder to use than the liquid dropper test, is the powder test more accurate? Should I just buy liquid kit for this test. I am not reading any Chlorine most of the time, and never see a combined Chlorine reading. The PH was high as of this morning (around 8.5).

I have already used around 10 gallons of liquid chlorine (2 weeks) in the pool and may need some help here. Since the powder test seems to be a little inaccurate, I went and purchased a cheap Taylor kit for the Chlorine and PH just to compare, will be retesting, I really don't want to waste too much of the test kit all at the beginning here. I will post the test results today. The pool is crystal clear, but Chlorine is getting expensive.

Thanks for the response, I am going to test and post all results today, my PH seems to be on the rise again, having problems since filling June 17th. I have the Taylor K-2006 test kit and a couple small kits for other family members to test FC and PH quickly to keep pool in check while I am away on business. The K-2006 test kit is a little complicated, but I'll go through it today. We are seeing high temps and a bit of rain in Florida, my water is crystal clear, but the cost seems extreme at the moment. Could the tap water during fill up cause any water problems?

TEST RESULTS from Taylor K-2006 test kit, Pool Pros please help here. Thanks in advance.

Water temp is 86°F in the morning, raises to 89°-90°F in the evening (Florida). I have been running pump at night to circulate the water at night.

FC = 2.4
CC = 0
PH = 7.6
TA = 130
CH = 150
CYA = 0

You have a great test kit.

You need to add CYA. Have you added any since you filled the pool? Any solid chlorine products (pucks, 'shock', etc)?

Add the CYA by using what we call the sock method. Get an old sock (no holes) and put the measured amount of CYA you need. Tie the sock closed and either suspend it in front of a return (hang it from your brush pole works with something weighted on the deck) OR if it still allows flow thru the skimmer, place the sock in the skimmer. Every 15/20 minutes give the sock a squeeze to speed up the process. Please DO NOT follow the directions on the container of CYA to just pour it into the skimmer and don't just toss the sock in the pool as the CYA is acidic and can bleach/stain pool finishes.

Maintain your FC using [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]. Base it on your expected CYA level. You need to add liquid chlorine DAILY

Digest that and let us know if you have questions.

Thanks for that quick reply, seem to be adding a ton of chlorine. I do float a 4" puck around the pool right now, they are Suncoast Complete 4 in one pucks. Should I go and purchase a specific product to put in the sock? How much in the sock to start, I will do this today.

Thanks again.

The reason you are going through so much chlorine is that you have zero CYA.

the FAS-DPD (ie powder) test measures chlorine accurately at higher levels than other tests. This is needed in the cases where you have an algae problem which needs cleaning up. Other chlorine tests may have some value but it’s probably easiest just to rely on one chlorine test which does everything you need.

How many of the pucks have you used?

Get CYA powder. Sometimes called Stabilizer or Conditioner. Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes. Comes in 4 or 5# packages. Should be under $20.

You need 2 lbs of CYA to get to 30 ppm. Depending on how many pucks you have used (they each add 4 ppm CYA to your pool) add the total amount.

Then no more pucks for daily maintenance.

Any recommendation on best CYA raise product, "Pinch me while they steal all of my pennies" pool store really messed me up last year on my round pool, I ended up draining and refilling, with nearly 10,000 gallons, will do anything to prevent drain and fill

OK, got it, heading to Lowes now. Only used 1 puck so far floating around, taken out when my 8 year old is swimming. Just filled this new pool a couple weeks ago.

HELP with CYA please

So, I placed the sock with 2 pounds of Pool Time (Home Depot) Chlorine Stabilizer, 2 days ago. Jug says "Cyanuric Acid 100%". I tested the water today, and am not reading any CYA or Combined Chlorine, but my water is not going through Chlorine at an alarming rate, the stabilizer seems to have worked, but am not getting a reading???

Taylor K-2006 Test Results:

FC = 4ppm
CC = 0
PH = 7.3
TA = 120
CYA= 0
